Does anyone know if a nine year old will need a picture ID or just a birth certificate. We are going to the bahamas in June and the lady at Royal Caribbean said she thought my daughter might need a picture ID but didn't know for sure.
We are going to the Western Caribbean onboard the Voyager of the Seas in February and were advised that we would need a birth certificate with a raised seal for our 7 yo and 15 yo. The 16 yo, however, would need a picture id. To be on the safe side with the increased security and all we ordered passports for everyone.
Just a Certified Birth Certificate will do. We have passports for our kids and they speed up check in at airports and cruise terminals. If you have the time and extra money, you might want to get them. Birth Certificates are so different from state to state and from county to county. Passports are all the same, so there is less time spent scrutinizing them.
BTW - He/She will have to wear an ID bracelet for the entire cruise with his/her lifeboat station printed on it. My kids refused to wear them and we let them take them off once they memorized their station and where it was. They knew the ship better than we did at 9 & 11!! They are uncomfortable and make the older kids feel like babies, or so they said. If you have a child that is new to cruising, they may not mind wearing them for their peace of mind.
We traveled on Explorer last summer with an 8 and 3 year old. The only travel documents we had for them were birth certificates. Also, the bracelets must be new, because they weren't around last June. Have fun! Julie
