The correct name of the cruise line is: Royal Caribbean International. (RCI)

Gloria,

Although this may add to your confusion, here goes!

RCI stands for Royal Caribbean International (its official name), as Ernie mentioned. I believe it also stands for Royal Celebrity International, since Royal Caribbean owns Celebrity.

RCCL stands for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and is the name many of we cruisers call it. By the way, Royal Caribbean uses this designation because, in addition to the website Donna mentioned, you can use www.rccl.com, and arrive at the official website.

Now the question is: what will they/we call it when Royal Caribbean merges with Princess..................? :)

The proposed merger is on hold pending review by US and European authorities to determine the effect on competition. Carnival's attempted hostile takeover is also subject to this review. Latest info seems to indicate that decisions will not be made and merger, if any, will not take effect until next Fall.

I suspect that if RCI and Princess do merge, they will operate under independent brands similar to how RCI and Celebrity, or Carnival and Holland America operate.

Sean,

Yea, but how fitting would "Royal Princess" be?!

Re: RCI & RCCL same thing?

Everything hasn't been said about RCCL & RCI.

Until 1997 RCCL was the name of the company, and stood for "Royal Caribbean Cruise Line".

In 1997, when they bought Celebrity Cruises...

- the company's name became Royal Caribbean International, RCI
- RCCL became Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Miami-based owner of the two cruise brands (RCI and Celebrity)

"Royal Celebrity" doesn't exist! But there is a new brand called "Royal Celebrity tours" which offfers land-tour programs throughout Alaska for RCI and Celebrity guests.

Hope this helped

Romain.
