Default Xel Ha from Cozumel on our own?

Hi-

We're first time cruisers with 7 y.o. twins, leaving April 26, 2003. We did Xel Ha on our honeymoon about 10 years ago and are anxious to take the kids there. However, the Explorer only offers a Tulum-Xel Ha excursion which doesn't allow enough time for Xel-Ha. How risky would it be for us to take the ferry over, and a bus to Xel-ha, without missing the ship? It will be docked from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Thanks!

-June

A young couple on our Echantment cruise did it on their own, There are large size ferries running on schedule to the mainland right at teh cruise dock.. They took a ferry & a bus & had a great day. I would mention however, that they are Mexican graduate students living in Phila so they had the advantage of speaking Spanish & being in their home country. But It does appear doable & they loved it!
