I think the horror stories are just that--urban legends. You can hear the same thing said about hair wrapping at travelling fairs. It's a fear-of-contamination thing. I agree with Peery that bringing your own comb might make you feel more confident, but I have no problem letting my daughter get her hair braided. Hope this helps!
I got my hair braided in the Bahamas on a Carnival cruise last year, no problems with lice. I did use my own comb, but she did have her combs in some kind of liquid, hopefully a disinfectant. Don't worry, its fine..........
braids are available on board, around $99 for a full head of braids. my daughter had her hair done in mexico ($30 for top half) and my son had three put in for $2 a braid. We noticed that the price that they quoted people kept on changing depending on how busy they were or their mood, or the change of the wind! it was had to make out.
I had my hair braided twice in the Bahamas. Both times, the lady used her own comb, and nothing happened to me. I'll never have my hair braided again, though, because it's *SO* frizzy when you take the braids out. The price was $2.00 a braid, but you can haggle it down to about $1.50 a braid.
Yeah, I want to get my hair braded too. I'll take Perry's advice and bring my own comb. But, what island would it be best to get it done on? I don't want them to be nagging me and trying to bribe me to let them braid my hair.
My daughter got her hair braided while on Princess in 2000, and yes we did get lice. It can happen, just be careful!!! It is not fun to get rid of at all. We did not take our own combs, and they had their combs kept is a solution type, but we still came home with head lice. However with her hair in the braids, it was easy to spot them quickly, but not soon enough as they still laid many nits.
