Secret Excursions

My wife and I sometimes go to local luxury hotels for the day rather than going to overcrowded public beaches. They offer nice amenities and are usually not nearly as crowded. While they sometimes charge a fee for using them, it is generally a nice inexpensive alternative to the excursions offered on board.

What "secrets" have you found??

Book your own excursions rather than the ships, or just rent a car/jeep and explore. Much more freedom and cheaper (albeit riskier).

Re: Secret Excursions

Here I go coupling another car to the CM love train.

A question I saw posted on this site led to the very best day of my February cruise.
Someone posted a question about the historic relica La Nina. I followed a link
and made a reservation. The sail was not offered through the cruiseline. And there was a little bit of sweat trying to get back for the last tender to the ship. But the tour was worth the subsequent nerves. I still count it as a "happy place," as the buzz word goes.

I hope I'll have at least an hour like that on my next cruise.

Where was this tour?

Re: Secret Excursions

The best "secret excursion" I've had was to go in with 2 other couples and rent a power boat and captain from nautinymph in St. Thomas. We had a glorious day touring the islands for about $75/person.

The second best was renting a car on Guadeloupe to tour Mt. Soufriere (volcano), the country side, and the waterfalls. It was a VERY busy day, and just about missed the ship :-), but what fun!

I really don't know if there are many "secrets" left on the Carib. Anything that has market appeal probably has an excursion to it. Those that don't don't have wide appeal, are dangerous, illegal, or there's not enough time to complete it.

Re: Secret Excursions

jaonalec, the tour was at Grand Cayman Yacht Club. However, she is a sea going replica which has a cruise schedule she follows. Right now, I believe she's on the west coast of the U.S. But she wintered in Grand Cayman and will Winter again in Grand Cayman in 2004.

The question with the link was posted in Destinations Forum under the Caribbean thread last January. If you scroll back, you'll see it. Look for the word La Nina in the topic.

Re: Re: Secret Excursions

Good 1 browezilla. I was considering chartering a boat myself in St thomas. We are trying to decide between the tour (6 person sailboat) or chartering our own.

Steve- saw that ship in port. Looked pretty cool. Will have to try that on our next Western Carib trip. We are heading East on this one.

Thanks for the ideas people.
