The port side is the left side as you face the bow, or front, of the ship.
What you may have heard was an old story about the origin of the word POSH. According to this, the 19th century british, sailing to India, prefered to ride POSH or Port Outbound Starboard Home. The reason for this is because the north side of the ship was more sheltered on the route to India. Other routes might have a different "best side" depending on weather and direction.
A simple method of remembering port and starboard is when your facing the front (pointy end) port is on the left side. Remember port and left both have 4 letters in their spelling. If it doesn't have 4 letters you on the other side (starboard).
