I am going on my first cruise and it starts in Barcelona. I want to go a few days ahead of time, but don't want to stay too far away. Any suggestions as to what district to stay in, any hotel recommendations and exactly where are the ships?
The ships are docked directly infront of the city. You can choose any hotel within the city and not be too far from the ship. There are no hotels from where you can walk to the ship but the taxi ride is a short one. There is a nice little hotel (not sure if it has aircon though) - the Regencia Colon which is in the gothic quarter and almost directly in front of the Barcelona Cathererale. It is a 5 min walk to the Las Ramblas and Place de Catelunya. Public transport to other attractions is a breeze. If you are staying longer the Barcelona card is well worth it as you can you public transport too while getting reductions on admissions. Nov should get you a fairly good hotel rate. Do bring a warm jacket as it can get rather cold & windy in Barcelona at that time of year especially if you are planning on lots of sight seeing.
I stayed at the Avenida Palace and recommend it, centrally located and minutes walk to the Rambalas.
