I am interested in finding out if the Serenade of the Sea, the Silver Shadow or the Oosterdam or any ship made it close to Hubbard Glacier on June 8th 2004. We made it into Yakutat Bay, saw Hubbard from a distance and turned away. The Captain (from the Mercury) told us the conditions were to hazardous. We could see a ship much closer to it (probably the Serenade of the Sea). Some of our passengers were told by crewmembers that it ran into some difficulties. I kind of feel cheated. I suspect we were told only half the story. The rest of the cruise was fine but we missed what was supposed to be the highlight.
I feel for you and agree, visiting Hubbard Glacier was the highlight of our Alaska cruise. We were fortunate with good weather and were able to get very close, it was great, but things like this do happen sometimes, may-be next cruise you'll get to see some wonderful glacier.
