Yes, we did the Mayan Ruins in August of 2001. It was an hour bus ride there with a very interesting and informative tour guide. I believe we were there on the hottest day of the year. Bring lots of water, hat, walking shoes and sunscreen. We also took 2 wet wash clothes in a zip lock baggie to wash our face. Boy was that a life saver. You can go into the water so be prepared for that too. Some tours offer lunch but ours didn't so we just ate at the Subway outside the entrance. As we prepared for our hour ride back, beer and soda was past out and then most people slept. We really enjoyed the tour, including our 16 y/o son.

Which Mayan ruins? I went to Tulum. It was pretty nice. It was a combo tour with a stop at Xel Ha. Xel ha was a nice natural preserve/lagoon.

Has anyone ever done the Tulum ruins on their own? I would love to see them, but the 6 hour excursion with RC is more than I'm wanting to spend. Having never been to Cozumel I'd at least like to see some of the area before hopping back on the ship.

Thank you!

We went to Chizhen Itza out of Progresso.

Absolutely fabulous! We did the ship shore excursion - you definately should see these ruins with a guide. The trip to the ruins is about an hour or so and the whole way the guide gave us a history of the Mayan people, and continued on site with an explanation of all the structures. THe Mayan people were brilliant!

this trip was the highlight of our cruise.

I agree with a previous person who wrote about the heat. I came prepared with Evian face moisturizing spray, sunscreen, lots and lots of water and wet washcloths which I put on my head under my sunhat. I still fried. It is extremely hot!!

We too had considered the Myan Ruins, but were put off by the length of the excursion. Six hours in the jungle is a bit much for us.

Re: Mayan Ruins

There are lots of ruins in Mexico, so you need to give us more info.
In the Yucatan.
Chichen Itza is the most impressive
Uxmal is close in impressiveness, and in my opinion is the most beautiful.
I would rank either of the above as a "most see" if you haven't seen Mayan ruins.

Tulum has terrific location, but the ruins are much less impressive than those at CI or Uxmal.
San Gervaso - I wouldn't bother going there unless you've never seen ruins and these are the only ones that fit into your schedule.
