KEY WEST, Fla. -- Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas ship was hit Friday morning by a barge while at port in Key West.
The Coast Guard said there was an 8-foot hole in the side of the ship. The hole is above water, so the ship is not taking on water, officials said.
Authorities said the ship apparently was hit while docked -- there is a mark about 50 feet long down the side of the ship.
The ship has been taking more than 2,000 passengers on cruises since going into service in 1997. The ship is popular for travelers, featuring amenities like conference rooms, a rock-climbing wall, a casino, a shopping center and many outdoor pools.
Was shocked to hear about this accident and glad no one was hurt. My daughter freaked out when she heard the news. Her husband booked a cruise on the Enchantment (Nov. 18th sail date) as a surprise birthday gift for Jan. This was going to be their first cruise without the kids. They will be very disappointed if they can't sail as planned, since it is so hard for them to be able to get away together. When Jan called Royal Caribbean this a.m., they said they hadn't heard anything about this. Since we live in Ft. Lauderdale and the ship sails from here, the noon news should have more info.
Barge hits Enchantment of the Seas, no injuries reported
MIAMI -- A construction barge struck the Enchantment of the Seas during its call in Key West, Fla., creating a six-foot hole in the ship’s hull.
Royal Caribbean International said none of the 2,040 passengers or 741 crew onboard were injured in the crash, which occurred at 8 a.m. on Nov. 5, while the Enchantment was docked at its berth in Key West.
The barge created a puncture in the forward port side of the hull about six feet long and one foot wide, roughly six feet above the water line, Royal Caribbean said.
Temporary repairs have been started, and the line said it expected the Enchantment to depart Key West for Cozumel, Mexico, on schedule. The company does not expect to cancel any future sailings of the ship.
Royal Caribbean said it was participating in a U.S. Coast Guard investigation of the incident.
Yikes! We just got off the ship Oct. 30. I'm glad it did not happen when we were on it. We had my elderly parents with us. My mother would have had a heart attack she was nervous as it was. I am so glad no one was hurt.
