Funny you asked.....

Last night our family watched our home-movie from the Explorer of the Seas (Jan 31, 2004). Our kids (now 16 & 14) hung around to see the footage I had taped of Gordon Whatman.

They both said, "He was the best Cruise Director we've ever had!" They are veterans of 5 cruises.

My husband and I agree that Gordon Whatman certainly was enjoyable and very polished. Our personal favorite CD was not on RCCL -- it was on The Big Red Boat.

I definitely must agree to Gordon Whatman... he was the best in the business- he has since retired now form ship life.

Ashley Kerr on the Adventure because she's the only RCI cruise director I've had!

Nikki something or other on the Sovereign. I can't remember her last name but she was awesome.

My all-time favorite is Jim Cannon with Celebrity. He was the most personable CD, I've ever met. He would remember your name throughout the cruise and even years later when you sailed again. Unfortuantely, Jim is no longer a CD, but works in the office now for Celebrity. They have quite a treasure in him.

I believe that Richard Spacey will be joining the Adventure shortly as Ashley will be moving to the Empress.
Also one of my favorites was Jeff Arpine although he was rarely sober.
Also there was Jeff Martin.
Both have since retired.

Hello all!! I am new to these boards. I have been lurking for some time now. YES! I thought Jim Cannon was a good CD. He enjoyed talking to people. I love the way he hosted the newlywed-not-so-newlywed show on the Mecury. I am sorry to hear that he is no longer a CD.

I loved Richard Spacey on the VOS. I hope our paths cross again one day he made our cruise alot of fun. I know that he will never forget the infamous answer given during the "love and marriage" game show on our cruise! Lets just say it was bleeped out when they aired it on ship TV.

I agree, Jim Canon was very personable and an all-around fun guy.

My personal favorite, however, is James Andrews onboard Explorer of the Seas. I've been on 9 cruises and he's still my hands-down FAV.

We've only been on one cruise so far (although we are going on the Voyager June 3rd), but we absolutely loved Becky Thomson ''Hello Love''. We thought she very energetic and entertaining. Does anyone know who the cruise director is going to be for the Voyager leaving Cape Liberty this June?

Sorry to hear that Gordon Whatman is no longer a CD. He was hands down the best in all regards. He definitely made the cruise fun for everyone regardless of age, national origin, economic level, and so on. e.g. No boring waits for the stage show, he had mini events or contests going on in the theater! He was also talented on stage.

Just back from Brilliance. Dan Dan the Party Man was Ok as a CD--very funny. Unfortunately-- his assistant "Franco" was a screamer--not my idea of fun. It was such a turn off on Carib night, at the 60's party & other events....It was like a bad sweet sixteen party!

Being that I've never been on a cruise before, I guess I don't understand the whole cruise director thing. What exactly do they do? From what it sounds they are usually very funny and entertaining. Where do you see them entertaining you (mostly by the pool) or do they move to other areas also? I saw on the travel channel they were doing alittle contest (horse race)?? Do these contest get annoying or are they pretty entertaining? It's probably hard to invision until you get there what it really like, but when I saw the little bit that I did on the travel channel I felt like the contests and a guy talking into a microphone could get annoying when you're laying by the pool. Hopefully I'm wrong.

In response to the above message, we saw the ''Horse Racing'' by the pool on the Navigator and it was very, very annoying. However, lots of other activities we're fun: the Love and Marriage Game Show, the Quest Scavenger Hunt type game, Mr. Sexy Legs Contest (by the pool). The Cruise Director is basically like a really outgoing, fun, friendly host at one big party.

By the way, we will be sailing on the Voyager in June, does anyone know who the Cruise Director will be? We have read that Becky Thompson is taking a break and going back to England.
