Default Sneaking booze onboard

The last cruise I went on (7 day) I came home to a bar bill over $1K. This time around I look to minimize the pain and smuggle some booze onboard. My question is this, what is the significance of pouring the alcohol in water bottles? I know I should cover in bubble wrap, put in plastic bag, etc, but I look for more insight. Also, why sneak soda on board when you could just buy the cans separately for $1.50 US or the soda card for approx $40 US?

Thanks

On our last cruise, I brought one bottle of alcohol in my checked baggage and no one said a thing. It was wrapped in bubble wrap and ziplock bags so it wouldn't spill or break, but I didn't try to hide it in water bottles. I also brought several bottles of soda in the checked luggage, and brought more back in a carry on from one of the ports and no one said a thing. It went right through the scanners with no problems.

Depends on the ship. I always take some beer with no problem. On RCI you can buy liqour on the ship and take it to your cabin at about the same price you would pay in the liqour store so there is no point. I bring some mixers and limes and get a bottle of vodkae once onboard. Carnival won't let you do that. See next pic of my Carnival smuggle.

One vodka, one rum and one beeeeer! -George Thoroughgood

This narrow cooler worked great as a carry-on. I had all my personal stuff and then converted to cooler once in the cabin.

I leave in two weeks and haven't read the boarding package yet but are you saying I can't even bring a 12pack of diet coke on board the Voyager? If not, whats the point of having a refrigerator in the room?

Everything I've read states the cruise line holds all alcohol until you disembark.

Yes, only if you buy it duty free or in port to take home. Pay regular price and you can bring it to your stateroom. I am going on my 9th RCI cruise this May. Unless things have changed recently, this is the case. Anyone have more recent information. They do not advertise the fact but there are two pirces on the bottle of the well stocked liqour store. The duty free price if you plan to take it home and the regular price to take it to your cabin. I am talking about $17 for a liter of Smirnoff or maybe $20 for Absolute. Not unreasonable.

Don't see the point in "smuggling" liquor on board - you can purchase what you want duty-free on the ship and just pay $9 or $10 extra for taking it to your room - still less expensive than purchasing it at home.

Having said that, we do bring diet Pepsi - not available on RCCL - $5 for twelve 24 oz. bottles vs. $1.5 per can - you do the math. But, even the cost is not the issue. With the soda card, you can only get fountain sodas - usually not good. We also bring bottled water - one bottle purchased on board costs nearly as much as a case. The cruise line has no problem at all with this. We also bring some wine because the ship's markup is totally ridiculous ($28 for Berringer White Zinfandel which costs $4.99 at home). We pay the corkage charge if we want it in the dining room, but usually just enjoy it on our balcony.

We still spend plenty at the bars for Cosmos and beer!

You are the kind of man my husband would love to sail with. He loved the Miller Lite pic. Now you have given him ideas. Unfortunately we sail of our San Juan.

Thanks, You can still do it. Dedicate one suitcase. On the way home you can fill it with all the junk you buy while you are on vacation.

If I devote one bag for booze.....which I intend to do.......how many carry on's are you allowed. I hate skunked beer......so I will have try and buy warm beer to take and then put it on ice as I need it. The refrigerators or not refrigerators......they are coolers and don't nothing to keep your stuff cold.

Just to clear a couple things up: NCL is the only line,at this time that really cracks down on the bringing liquor on board, Celebrity will also if you flaunt it when going aboard. All the lines have policies against bringing any booze on borad, so don't be surprised if RCI starts convescating it one of these days. Yes, you can bring all the soft drinks on you want. I go along with the bit about just buying the booze in the duty free shops, pay the extra $10 and take it too your cabin. Of course who knows when this will be eleminated? Not all lines allow you to take it too your cabin. As for how many carry ons, this isn't an airline. There are no rules, as long as the carry on will fit through the xray machine. More than anything, just remember even if you bring your own booze on board don't take the beer cans out to the pool and do purchase some drinks from the ship. It's pretty tacky to bring your ice chest out on deck. . You wouldn't walk into a restaurant and expect to bring your own booze. NMnita

That is really quite a hefty bar bill--unless it was top of the line wine or champagne!

Nope, sadly enough those were mostly 12 oz. Becks bottles and some mixed drinks.

Now that I realize you can pay a consumption charge and carry the booze to your room, I guess there's really no point in smuggling booze.

I've been reading through all the emails about booze or no booze and how to smuggle etc and it still doesn't complety make sense to me. We are going on the Majesty of the Sea. So if I am reading it right, you can buy wine or booze on ship -- anytime, or just when you get on the ship? You're really not suppose to bring booze on the ship, but they really don't check either? Is that what I'm assuming?

I use water bottles in my carry on because Vodka is my drink of choice, and it is clear, looks like water.
It just reduces the chance for any sort of hassel.
Also, I want it with me to have a "happy vacation" cocktail as soon as I get into my cabin!
The bags can take a few hours to be delivered , as we know.

We just sailed soveriegn on jan 21. I brought vodka in water bottles in my carry on. we also had beer in our suit case as well as soda. no one said a word. You will need lots of alcohol cause the music entertainment is horrible on the ship. we stayed out to 12 or so each night and were never able to dance. the band in the disco loung was playing 9 to 5 by dolly parton. i mean come on!!!!!
