Default Single Parent traveling with Child

I am a divorced mother of one traveling on RC in two weeks- can't wait. I have custody of my son, but have heard I should have a notorized statement from my son's father granting permission to travel with him. We are going to the Bahamas, Key West, and Miami. Do I need this document notorized or is it just for someone traveling with another person's child?

I am divorced and am taking my two boys for the 4th time this May. I have always taken the letter but have never been asked for it. Of course, we have the same last names and they live with me half the time. I am tempted not to bother but could you imagine getting there and not being allowed onboard!! I will bring one again just in case.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you are a widow(er) traveling with your children. What proof would you have to bring if any?

It all depends on who checks you in. I've been asked for it and was told it needs to be notarized. I was also told if asked for it and you couldn't produce it your child would be denied boarding.

CA Cruiser: That came up on another board and the person was advised to bring a certified copy of the death certificate.

Definitely need a copy of the death certificate. My sister takes her kids to Cancun and the airlines and Mexican officials want to see it. One time she was at the airport, and she forgot the death certificate and they wouldn't let them on the plane. Luckily she had someone fax a copy, which was accepted.

I am a single dad with full custody. I traveled with my 2 kids and was not asked for this letter - but also was unaware that I might need one. Am now booked on another RCCL cruise - and was considering trying to get a letter. However this is straight from the RCL website:

Family Legal Documents:
Adults who are not the parent or Legal Guardian of any minor child traveling with them are required to present the child's valid passport and visa (if required) or the child's birth certificate (original, a notarized copy or a certified copy) and an original notarized letter signed by at least one of the child's parents. The notarized letter from the child's parent must authorize the traveling adult to take the child on the specific cruise and must authorize the traveling adult to supervise the child and permit any medical treatment that must be administered to the child. If a non-parent adult is a Legal Guardian, the adult must present a certified certificate of Guardianship with respect to the child.

It looks to me that if you are a legal parent you would not need a letter from the other parent. This only makes sense. How about a single parent of kids, whose other parent is completely out of the picture with no contact with the kids. In that case, clearly a letter would not be available. I am curious if anyone has something in writing from RCL on this, other than the above.

jwith2boys - I was asked for the letter on my last RCL cruise. Luckily my ex and I get along fine and getting the letter has never been an issue. With the recent parent abductions of children and taking them out of the country to avoid custody orders I think security is starting to get tighter. Let's face it the cruise line doesn't want to find themselves invovled in any kind of dispute over one parent leaving the country with the kids without the other parent's permission and then not returning. If they've had you get a letter and asked to see it they're covered.
