Default Never again

What happened to Royal Caribbean? I always felt they were a step above Carnival and the other cruise lines. I took a May 9th cruise and it was a nightmare. First I must say that the workers on the ship were very nice. But, we had engine problems on the ship that made us travel at half speed and miss stopping at one of our ports. We had 2 days at sea instead of one. Now to be fair they did compensate us 150.00 which was very nice. However, due to the boat traveling at half speed we felt every wave and I was sick most of the cruise. Then we lost power for 3 hours. The ship was ok, I read people on this board say how nice the ship was, it was really just ok.
What really upset me was beware that RC charges your account a random amount on your credit card. Now what I mean by this is that in addition to your sea pass charges they charge you an extra random dollar amount and put this on hold. If you are using a debit card like we did, this random amount overdrew my checking account and I had 3 items bounce. I was charged 3 NSF fees. I called RC and their customer service Reps are terrible. She told me they have every right to charge any amount to my account, at first she tried to tell me it was stated in the pre boarding paperwork, then realized it is not. I told her I want them to pay for the NSF fee's and she hung up on me. Can you believe that a CSR hung up on a customer? I stayed in a suite and spent alot of money on the ship and they hang up on me?? I will never, never go on another Royal Caribbean ship. If you do, beware.

First of all, I have never cruised on Carnival. I choose Royal Caribbean because of the good reputation they have. Second, unlike most of you, I choose to pay for everything in cash. I do not bounce checks I budget my vacations and believe me I spend alot of money. Because I used my Debit charge card the funds comes out of my checking account, I did not budget for the amount they deducted. What is wrong with you people. Why are you attacking me? I am only trying to let everyone know that if you use your Debit card, inquire about if they put holds on your account and for how much so that you can budget and not be in the situation I am in.
Wait, maybe you all work for Royal Caribbean and the truth regarding your ships (I was on Empress of the Sea's) and your customer service puts your jobs on the line. I cant imagine ordinary people attacking someone for telling the truth regarding a resent cruise. Grow up everyone.

Babs, I have trouble with the face that they Take your charge/debit card, and put the amount due at the end of the cruise. What they are saying is the cruise line put a hold on her account for a amount of funds, that put the account over what she had in the checking account, that does not make any sense,............

Where do you bank? Pep Boys? You can look at you account any time 24/7 in your cabin. Next time use a RCCL Visa card! You will get credits toward your next cruise and no worry about bounced checks...checks whats that? lol.. If you cant get approved for RCCL card get one of those prepaid credit cards.

First of all you should NEVER use a Debit card for any kind of travel. They do tie up a certain amount of money and they do have a right to do that. I had a friend who used a debit card to pay for a trip to Ireland, the tour company went belly up and guess what - good-bye $ 3,000.00. You should also never use a debit card to rent a car.
If you have cash as you say you do, use a credit card and pay it off when you get home.

Actually, it would probably be much better to use a credit card at embarkation to secure the account and then pay the bill in cash before leaving the ship - this can be done and is much safer. I know a lot of people who do this at hotels also.

This is a RUDE and nasty thread. Some of you are shockingly rude. The OP had a legitimite problem, and BEING HUNG UP ON is so classless and unbusiness like, do you really believe that is the sort of passenger relations that you would like to be treated with?
I like the OP would be very distressed by the cruiselines tactics. I have travelled alot and I have never heard of this tactic.
I guess if all RCI pass. are like some of the bashers on this board then forget it, obviously not my type, but then, I don't believe most are, there are always a few cruisers who cannot hear any negative about " their" cruisline, it is most juvenile.

I always use American Express to back up my Sea Pass.
That way, if there is ever a "disputed or invalid" charge on my sea pass account after I return home, I can always call Amex and they will put that charge on hold and handle the dispute for me. It pays to be a Platinum member with well over 30 years of perfect credit history with Amex. They jump through hoops for me when the need arises - which fortunately is very very rare indeed.

I also check my sea pass acount every day from my cabin (available right on your in cabin TV). They do make mistakes (most are honest mistakes) in posting charges. This way I do not have to wait for the end of the cruise and stand in long lines at the pursers desk to get my final bill adjusted.

Sometimes using cash is a bad idea. On board ship is one of them. Renting cars is another - you can't do it with cash.

I'm going to have to agree that using a card that gives merchants access to your banking account is not wise. They use the same "hold" theory when you book a rental car with your debit card, I believe Budget and Alamo allow you to do this. NEXT SENTENCE - DO NOT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY - The companies do this to accommodate people that have a bad credit history and can't obtain a credit card. Since debit cards usually have a credit card logo on them, they allow you to use them but put the hold on it to save their butts.

Also if during the embarkation period you opt to pay cash, they will give you a $ 500.00 limit, when your acct reached 500 and the cruise isn;t over, you can go pay it, or some of it and continue to use your sea pass card. I agree that the cruiseline should not have hung up, but anyone who uses a debit card should know there will be consequenses. I too would like to know what ship you were on.

I'm sorry to say that I've had to delete some of the responses in this thread.

Personal attacks are not helpful at all, and not allowed. They violate our terms of service agreement.

For information... whether anyone uses a credit card, or debit card, there is a "hold" put on a certain amount of money to cover a "estimated amount" large enough to cover eventual charges.

The cruise line preauthorize the $$s , thus making those funds unavailable to the card holder until the actual charges have been processed.

If the debt card or credit card did not have funds available for the hold the passenger would be required to place a cash deposit on hold with the purser's desk to cover upcoming expenses.
If that cash deposit was spent the passenger would be called back to deposit more funds on the account.

Kupiecb,
Sorry to hear about your trip....Same thing kinda happened to us but we just switched to a credit card when the purser's office notified us and have learned never to use a debit cards again. If you would have researched this more on this website, you would have known there is a lot of info shared here and I personally made a note on a thread regarding using debit cards on 2/7/05. The banks have a daily limit for debit cards and it is best if you insist on using your debit card to call your bank, find out your daily limit, explain what you're doing and have it increased for the time you're on vacation. We either pay everything in cash or just use an zero balance credit card for the whole vacation, then when we get home, pay it off.

Before you say never, write a letter of your experience and see what response you get.

this has been very helpful. We have some friends going on a Disney cruise mid-summer and were planning on using their debit card. I will make sure they inquire about Disney's policies and practices before hand.

If you like the idea of using cash-like transactions as opposed to using a credit card, perhaps you might consider using travelers checks. It works very easily and you don't have to worry about your accounts at home getting messed up.

I am horrified that you had a bad experience with customer service, and I agree with the other poster who said you should document EVERYTHING. I'm also surprised to hear about RCI putting a large hold on your Visa Check card.

I'm not sure whether Visa check cards are the problem though. I like to use Visa Check cards for my vacationing because I like the way the banks negotiate a better daily currency rate for charges on international spending... and I won't have to pay any interest unlike my regular credit card. As I budget vacations in advance, I usually have all bills/checks written way before I have to use my check card, and then transfer money I've saved STRICTLY for vacationing into the checking account. I do think that it might make a difference in terms of your daily limit. ALSO: when travelling, it helps to let your bank know to expect those charges before you leave. Sometimes they too put a hold on stuff when your charging pattern is out of the norm.

My experience last year on the Voyager was not anything like yours. I settled all accounts on the last evening at Sea (I don't really spend on the ship except for pictures and maybe a t-shirt and the tips.). That was a Thursday. By Friday when I came home the RCI charges were on the check card just as I'd charged them.

Just to be sure, I was sure to bring that printout receipt that they give you. If there'd been discrepencies, my bank is ferocious about improper charges, will put me on a three way while they call the merchant and get my credit my cash back IMMEDIATELY while they pursue the vendor. (It's happened twice before due to errors of a company and another vendor who never shipped me something.) This is why I never throw away any receipt for anything charged on vacation until 2 months later.. to make sure what I've charged is what's charged to me.

God bless and I hope you get satisfaction from RCI on this matter. I agree with the poster who said that you should write a letter of complaint. Good luck on solving the situation.

THe problem isnt with Paying the account -- its with holding the funds if you don't put a credit card -- using travellers checks isnt going to be anymore helpful. I'm sure in the documents that show you need a "credit card" up front -- no matter how you pay for it at the end. There is information on what you need to do if you don't have a credit card. My son wanted to pay for his purchases with his debit card -- but we put our credit card down for him for his seapass.

I also find it hilarious that when someone complains about anything its based on how much they spent .

"I stayed in a suite and spent alot of money on the ship and they hang up on me?? "

IF you want a "class" system cruise take another cruise line.

While i kinda feel sorry for the poster, it just shows that she's not travelled much before and is uninformed. I feel sorry also for the CSR who was having to deal with this person. I also wish I had read the posts before they were deleted

I dont; think that there is any excuse for anyone from Royal Carribean hanging up on you. However the lesson to be learned here never, never, never use a debit card. I have read alot of posts on this site and one thing that is clear. Royal Carribean is not the best at customer service. I have only had one occasion to complain to the cruise line after I sailed, I actually wrote them a two page letter. The response to me was that I was on the only person on the ship that complained, which I know is not true, as there were many, many, unhappy cruisers on that ship. Thank God they are no longer in business, or perhaps that is why. I can;t honestly say that Celebrity has alway been the best cruising experience for me, but there is something about the mega ships that I love, so I will continue to cruise Royal Carribean unless of course they do something to me. Well the Voyager returns to tommorrow from Bermuda, we'll see what everyone has to say.

Hey Shane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAPPY CRUISING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, it probably is if you into the casino from the front, walk to the back past the staircase and look to your left, it is on the wall, and it is a 10x machine, next to it is a machine that hits pretty regularly called American Beauty, on the 10X machine I hit 10x, double bar, 10x, the day before a woman hit 2500.00 on same machine. There was a machine in the casino that hit for $ 5,000.00 twice, the same machine. I'll tell you where it is for a percentage,
