Default Sharks

Has anyone heard of or seen any sharks in the swimmings areas of Labadee or Coco Cay while on a RCI cruise? Just curious.

Yes, Kuki is right. I have seen sharks that can swim on the land. Here is a picture of one.

My girlfriend and I saw sharks last year. They were quite large (2-3 meters). That was'nt at Coco Cay or Labadee, but Grand Bahama Island. Somewhere at Lucayan Beach. I just went in the waters with my big toe.

Just because you cant see them doesnt mean that theyre not there! They are there though. Just use common sense-dont go into the water if you see one, if youre bleeding, dont pee in the water (yes that attracts them too), dont spearfish (in case you were thinking about it), dont yell, thrash and splash around a lot, dont harass them, and personally I dont venture out beyond thigh deep water. Dusk and dawn are prime feeding times and the light isnt very good, so this is often when mistaken identity occurs. It happens in murky water too. Most sharks are afraid of humans and will leave you alone. When they do bite, its usually in error and its usually a test bite. More people die each year from snake bites, car accidents, and lightning strikes!

What about Hawaii? --for next yr's cruise we had planned two snorkeling trips but now I am getting cold feet--having the recent attacks publicized...

My mom and I did the kayaking excursion in Coco Cay in 2003. We never saw a shark, but our guide said that she saw a large hammerhead there once.

I went on the rccl navigator last year and i went to labadee and it was my favorite place i have EVER been, its the most beautiful place ive ever seen and I didnt see or hear anything about sharks---land or sea. You can also rent nice floats for a good price, or maybe free, i cant recall, they had a nice BBQ and shopping area as well. But definetely get off the boat that day, I've been traveling since I was 6, 15 now, and its my favorite place ever! enjoy!

Hammerheads though scary looking, usually dont attack people. In Hawaii-the big killer there is the Tiger and that one scares the you know what out of me the most as it will eat anything. Ive gotten into cages to go diving with Great Whites in Australia, but I wouldnt want to see a Tiger age or no cage! I still went diving in Hawaii though (did see several sharks). I say go for it, just be on the lookout. Seems that most attacks there are on surfers (and a few out swimming in the am and pm-prime feeding time)!

As for Labadee, I liked that stop too. Just be prepared in the shopping area for aggressive merchants who will follow you around (and a simple no thanks wasnt enough). I went in alone, but following a bunch of guys. My arm was grabbed a few times to pull me over to someones stall.

alison is definetely right with the agressive merchants in labadee, it actually frightened me because theyre all touching you and trying to put necklaces and jewelry on you even if you never looked at them, I didnt even look at all the stuff...i hadda get outta there, but otherwise, you'll love it.

Kim,
I felt the same way there, if they would of left me alone I would of stayed and actually bought something, but I too had to get out of there..

definetely, those merchants were crazy and I was even with my dad (who isnt very shrimpy and i was only 14) But it was actually scarey and i've been to other poverty-stricken islands before and never seen it that bad, we did end up buying some things though, and they talked my brother into getting them lunch from the BBQ and they gave him some free stuff, im sure they mean well...definetely not a reason not to get off though, I'll never forget Labadee!
