Default Missed Port

Doesn't the ship give you an onboard credit if they miss a port?

Never an onboard credit, I have read on these boards that sometimes you get the port fee refunded. But I guess that depends on what port you missed. I myself have missed many ports on cruises but never got any port fee refunded. Years ago there was a class action suit against Celebrity cruises and it had something to do with port fees (this also included other cruise lines). After about 3 years, we got vouchers in the mail. The amount of the voucher depended on how many cruises you had taken.

Thanks, was just wondering. As, I said in another thread, the least they could have done was made drinks half price for the day. Something is better then nothing.

After a couple of dozen cruises, missing ports is alot easier to take. It is in the contract and some lines are even moving it from the "fine print" to a more visible disclaimer. BUT you did pay the port fee(s) up front so I would certainly ask for them back.

What port did you miss and why? was it weather related?

I wouldn't worry about the amount, just use the "contact us" link on the lines website. Provide ship name/sail date and port missed along with your personal info. Customer service has been slow, to the point of rudeness, with all the cost cutting in the industry but it's still your $.

I have missed ports three times on cruises, once there was a problem with the ship, twice were weather related. We never received anything, not even a free drink. There was a couple at our table that were getting married in St. Martin and meeting their entire family there, they never made it because the stop was cancelled. The cruise line gave them nothing, nada.

On Holland America we missed Key West because of tropical storm Arleen. We were refunded our port fee and had free champagne at dinner.

Desta: On the Voyager cruise that missed Freeport, we were given free bloody Mary's or Screwdrivers from 12-1. They weren't cheap with them either. They would have given you 50 if you wanted them.

When our transformer blew on one cruise (RCCL) we had free drinks all day. You can just imagine being in the heat with everybody drinking. That also included sodas or pop as we say here in Pgh. They passed out water too. Then we had shipboard credit and 25% off our next cruise. However we were floating for 9 hours. We thought they compensated everyone very well. Don't know how that would be now. We missed ports due to weather and were not compensated.

On my first cruise on the Century which at the time was practically brand new. It was a special cruise to St Martin, (chartered), we went dead in the water and floated around for about 4 hours, no ac, no casino, no electricity period. We got to St Martin at 10:00pm, the only thing they did for us was start the tender service at 11:00 pm, so we could get on the island. That side of the island was downright scary at night, very nice during the day, but I did not feel safe walking around the streets so we went back to the ship. No credits, no nothing.

I also don't think it would of hurt then to do it all day........will at least till 4:00 pm. Also, it would have been nice for them to have made an anouncement for people to know about it.

It was only for an hour but the waiters were everywhere. They came out with big trays of them in the pool area. If you wanted the whole tray, they would give it to you. Not sure if it was all over the ship but when we went down for trivia in the Pig and Whistle, they all had them too. Someone in our group said there was an announcement but I didn't hear it either.

Just got back from the Mariner this week. We missed TWO ports due to Hurricane Dennis. The captain explained how sorry he was and that was it.

I'm not complaining. I know safety comes first. But, as far as any credit or anything - nope.

About 3 years ago on a Spring Break cruise - RCCL (cant remember which ship) possibly Radiance - we could not leave the port of San Juan because of engine problems they were waiting for a part. We waited the whole next day and still could not leave the port. We ended up leaving sometime early the next morning. They gave everyone a $100 ship board credit. We missed a port, but felt we were adequately compensated as it was St. Lucia and that is not one of my favorite.

What if you have scheduled and paid for an excursion on one of those stops? Do you get your money back then? This will be my first cruise and I'm getting scared reading all your posts. How common is it to miss a stop? Do you run into people all the time that this happens to?

If you have scheduled a ship excursion and you do not make port or it is cancelled by the ship or excursion company for any reason - you get your money back. If you have booked through an outside source, it depends on your contract with them if you get your money back or not. Most are willing to refund the money if the ship does not make port.
