Default Man over board! Brilliance!

Man goes overboard and not Carnival this time. Looks like foul play. See article:

Blood found in cruise ship cabin of missing Greenwich man
By Suzan Fraser, Associated Press Writer
July 12, 2005
ANKARA, Turkey -- Blood stains were discovered in the cruise ship cabin of a Greenwich, Conn. man who disappeared last week from a honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean, investigators said.

George Smith had been on a 12-night cruise, and went missing somewhere between Greece and Turkey. He was missing when the ship docked at the Aegean resort of Kusadasi.

Smith and his wife had been drinking heavily and had been gambling at the ship's casino before his disappearance, an official from the Kusadasi prosecutor's office, told The Associated Press Tuesday.

His wife woke up the next morning and went to the gym, not noticing that her husband was missing, he said. Smith was reported missing after cleaners found blood stains in the cabin and alerted the ship's captain, he said.

The official said the woman appeared not to know what had become of her husband. She was handed over to officials from the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul after being questioned by the prosecutor, he said.

The official was speaking on condition of anonymity. Civil servants in Turkey are rarely allowed to speak on the record.

"We don't know if it is murder or not. He may have fallen over by himself, he may have fought with someone from the casino, we don't know," the official said.

A U.S. Embassy spokesman in Ankara, who asked not to be named, said the man disappeared somewhere between Greece and Turkey and Greek and Turkish authorities had launched a search.

"The circumstances of his disappearance are being investigated. U.S. officials have been involved," the spokesman said.

Police in the Aegean resort of Kusadasi said police divers had searched the harbor over the weekend but had not found a body.

Lynn Martenstein, a spokeswoman for the Royal Caribbean International company, said Monday that the Greek Coast Guard used helicopters and Coast Guard cutters during a four-day search, which was suspended late Saturday.

Smith's wife was released after questioning and flew back the following day to her parents' home in Connecticut, Martenstein said.

Cruise officials said earlier in the week there was an indication Smith may have fallen overboard.

Officials had not determined if that was the case, and were working with the FBI and international authorities to continue the investigation.

Hey Dave, thanks for the update. I saw a brief article about this on my local news e-mail. What a great honeymoon!!!!! Wonder if the guy was worth something that the new wife wanted!!! It's a tragedy just the same. Hope they find the answers as to what happened.

Odd that it says they were drinking heavily and then she got up early to go to the gym and didn't notice he wan't there??? Blood in the cabin can be explained by him sneaking in in the dark tripping and hitting his head. Then maybe went out on the balcony or up on deck and fell over.

You know I have been on 10 cruises, and not once was I afraid of falling overboard. I just don;t see it. I keep seeing these postings about people falling overboard, and unless you are horsing around or jump intentionally, I don;t see how you can go overboard. I guess the newlyweds had a suite or something, there is no way that I would not notice if my husband was not in the room. Maybe she had nothing to do with it, but if he got back to the room bleeding if in fact he was in a fight, did the perpetrator break into his room and then throw him overboard. Makes no sense at all.

I hope I see this one on Law and Order, or CSI ripped from the headlines.

I didn;t consider the balcony, since I never had one, I would have no idea how easy they may be to go over.

They are not that easy to go over, in my opinion. Unless you were fooling around and climbing it.

As for drinking heavily, don't know about any one else but the last thing I would want to do in the morning after drinking heavily is get up to go to the gym. Get up and go to the bathroom maybe but the gym, never. I also would notice if my husband wasn't in bed with me. Even more so if it was my honeymoon. The details sound iffy but you never know nowadays.

If she did do it for the money, I see a new cruise ad on the Life Channel or during Oprah. Could be a new theme cruise

Wow, no matter how you look at it, it's a shame. I've only had balcony cabins and even if I was totally drunk I don't think I could "fall" overboard, no way. As far as the wife not noticing the hubby was missing, my husband usually gets up before me, gets coffee, walks around the upper decks enjoying the sunrise, so it wouldn't be strange for me to wake up and have him not in the room. Of course I think I'd notice if he hadn't been seen since the night before.

Got to remember, they were on their honeymoon. If he was so drunk the night before I doubt he was out walking around. But thats just my opinion. Perhaps we should all get together and send all of our theories to whatever authorities are handling this. I know I watch to much CSI.

They were not in a suite -- just a balcony cabin on the 9th floor. A person would have to be sitting on the railing or leaning way over it to "accidentally" fall off. I am afraid of heights, but i look over the balcony frequently and never get that sense of losing my balance.

After reading all these posts it makes me wonder how someone can actually get over those railings. My thoughts are he either was thrown or jumped!!!! So very sad either way. Those railings are waist high and so it would be hard to "tip" thank God. I'm also a little leary of heights but always enjoy the balcony cabins. I find it awesome at night to be so dark and empty looking out to the sea, who would consider jumping into the sea must have problems. It just is so sad for all involved. He was someones son, brother, friend, and for a short time husband.

When you involve alcohol, many things are possible. On one of the early sailings of the Adventure of the Seas, an intoxicated young woman tumbled to her death on to the dock from a balcony . If you're standing on a chair, a table, the railing, ... There are many ways to accidentally fall from the railing. Most are very easily avoidable if you are thinking clearly.

I live in Westport, about 20 minutes away from Greenwich. Greenwich is a really rich town, very similiar to Westport. Lots of multi-million dollar homes & such. If she was after the money, I would not be surprised. Greenwich is part of Fairfield County, CT which has been said to be the 2nd richest county in the United States behind Beverly Hills.

Anyone know if he had a life insurance policy?

It's up to the news bureaus to report the news. If the news doesn't report it, it isn't the responsiblity of the cruise line, the police department, or anyone else to get the message out there.

Has anyone read the book Skinny Dip by Carl Hiasson? It is about a husband who takes his wife on a cruise and throws her overboard...however that is just the beginning of a great story.

This story just does not make any sense to me..a newlywed should certainly notice if their partner was not in the room when they wake up...not to mention that the cabins are not that big you would not notice. Something mighty fishy here.

I live in Fairfield which is close to Greenwich and they are reporting on this everyday. I was on the AOS that same week on my honeymoon. My husband and I were never apart during the trip, unless one of us went to the bathroom. I don't know how she wouldn't realize he wasn't there with her at night. Come on!

Nothing much new from Ct. There was an article in paper yesterday that the wife has flown back home to Cromwell, has not said anything, and his parents have flown to Europe where ship was because they have heard nothing.

Nancy Grace Cnn had the story tonight. She says that their was blood also on a lifeboat outside the cabin. They were both apparently drunk as skunks. The wife doesn't remember going back to cabin; just being in Casino. That's all I have. P
