the monarch shipyard fire???

i was talking to a guy who used to work on the monarch of the seas back when it was launched, and he said that whilst the ship was under construction a major fire did break out which destroyed most of the ship causing some sort of a switch with the majesty of the seas becoming the monarch and the monarch kept back in france to be rebuilt and renamed majesty..
does anyone know if this story is true, and if you have any information on what happened????
thanks alot

Re: the monarch shipyard fire???

What happened can be described in short as follows.
At the end of 1988 RCCL signed a contract with Chantiers de lī Atlatintique for two more Sovereign-class ships, the MN for delivery in January 1991and the MJ at the end of the same year.
On December 3, 1990 when the MN was ready for here first sea trial, welding sparks ignited a fire which gutted the forward third of the nearly completed vessel.
By replacing the burned out parts with equipment earmarked for the next ship (MJ), delivery was only delayed by about half a year. On Oct ober 15, the MN left the yard for
San Juan and the MJ crossed the Atlantic in spring 1992.
