Visiting Atlantis Resort while in Nassau

I will be traveling on the Voyager on 4/1 and rather than doing a shore excursion while in Nassau, I thought my mom and I would take a cab to the Atlantis resort where I could get some sun at the pool/beach and she could gamble in the casino. Is anyone familiar with Atlantis' policy regarding use of the pool by non-hotel guests? Can you tell me how far the Atlantis is from the dock (miles/timewise)? Cost of a cab?

You must be a registered guest of Atlantis to use the pools and waterslides, there is security at the entrance and you have to have a wristband.
Casino is open to the public. It is absoutley gorgeous.
Its about a 10 minute cab ride(land or water) from the pier to Atlantis.
Truly consider taking a tour of the Aquarium "The Dig" it is facinating.

I am visiting Atlantis during a cruise to the Bahamas in July. I found it cheaper to book a room with Comfort Suites Bahamas. They apparently have an agreement with Atlantis that, if you stay with Comfort Suites, you are able to use all of Atlantis' facilities. It was cheaper to pay for the room at Comfort Suites than to do a shore excursion there through the cruise line, plus you have access to everything!! :-P

While you can't use the pool, we used the beach right out behind Atlantis and had a great time there that day. No cost.

Going to the Atlantis will cost you $$$$$$$$
if you do book a room at Best Western in order to use the Atlantis resort make sure you pay close attention to your bill...and keep the receipt they give you upon check in. When I got my mastercard bill a month later there were unauthorized charges on my card as well as the wrong amount for the room billed to my account. Also the Best Western doesn't have a toll free number for that resort so when you try to call and resolve it you have to pay international phone rates...
another thing is that you have to leave enough time to get off the ship, walk over to the dock area, take a cab up to the Best Western, check in, and walk over to the Atlantis.Don't even think about "sneaking into the property" as there are security guards everywhere checking wristbands. I think the whole process took us an hour and a half and we never even opened the door to our room at the Best Western. Talk about a pain in the butt. Too much wasted time...
Just be careful-
Also. the beach behind the resort is filled with Bahamian people contantly trying to sell you stuff. You see the Atlantis resort doesn't "Own" the beach front as all beach front is considered "public property"
We couldn't relax at all on the beach so we finally moved onto the property by the pool and since we had a writsband it wasn't a problem but I would have liked to sit on the actual beach for a while.
Another thing is you will end up paying for your meal at the Atlantis and trust me it isn't cheap!
We had 1 small salad, one small sandwich, one ice tea and one tropical drink and it was $62.00. I was still hungry but couldn't justify spending any more money on the property.
I'd never go back-too much time, money and agrivation.

Nothing about Atlantis is cheap. Weve stayed there twice (anniversary present fom my parents, and reward for top sales by hubby). Its an impressive place though. You can tour the inside casino, shops for free but the Dig, pools, and slides all require a wristband. You can tour the grounds and Dig for about $25 pp, but the only way to use the pools, and slides is to be a paying guest fo Atlantis or Comfort Suites (and I guess now Best Western). The slides look like a lot of fun. Unfortuantely both times we went I was pregnant with both kids. Most of the restaurants are buffet style and it will run around $30 pp. A burger will run around $15. The food is so so, and the service is the same (it had improved on our second trip).

If you just want to go and see the place, its worth the tour. Personally I think a day room is a waste of time and money just to use the pools and slides since the place is so huge. The other thing, if you take the water taxi it doesnt drop you off at Atlantis (unless it does now) so be prepared to walk several blocks. And leave plenty of time to get back to the ship as traffic can be a mess in the afternoon.

i dont remember payng to go through the dig but that was afew years ago but i do recall the 17.00 omlette! eat on the ship.

alison1170 March 19th, 2006 07:22 AM

Yes you have to pay to see the Dig. They have security standing at the entrance to it, and within to check for wristbands. If you dont have the daily on site guest band, or a tour band you wont get in (your room key will work though). Same goes for accessing the outside areas. There are staff posted outside each door and will make you go back in if you cant show the above items.

snooty Atlantis

We were just in Nassau Friday and paid a visit to the Atlantis. And while the hotel is huge and gorgeous, we found we were looked down on quite a bit while there briefly. We shelled out over $40 for a very simple and unimpressive lunch at the deli near the marina. Service there was terrible and the 15% gratuity was already on the bill. Instead of spending an obscene amount for access to Atlantis' facilities, we quickly left and spent our time at the public beach adjacent to the hotel, which was free entry. Chaise loungers may be reserved for $5 each. The surroundings were gorgeous and the people walking about selling items weren't rude or pushy. You ignore them, they leave you be. The cab to Paradise Island from ships was $4 per person.

The Atlantis is expensive - hands down. Why? It's on its own island! You go over a small bridge & you are on the island. If you want eat, stay on the mainland (you'll see what I'm saying when you get there). There is a lovely place right on the water (forgot the name) just to the right of the bridge as you go past it. I think it was 2 stories high or something.

Atlantis? Nothing spectacular. Beach, water, lazy river ride, casino. Too much hype on it. It's overrated.

The ships dock right there downtown, so you'll see the Atlantis from the ship. It's the tallest thing on the island.

alison1170 March 23rd, 2006 04:20 PM

Atlantis is on Paradise Island, not its own island as there are several other resorts, hotels, and other businesses there.

Youre right about the service being terrible. For the most part, the staff is not pleasant nor helpful. In the shops they are downright snooty. Both times weve stayed there, they try to make you feel special at checkin. Our first visit I had booked a oceanview room in the Beach Tower (cheapest). They told us upon checkin that the room wasnt available and that they would upgrade us to the next tower. We ended up looking over the roof of the lobby and the parking lot. I complained and we moved again back to the Beach Tower with an oceanview-a little sliver at least (looking over another roof littered with trash). Last year, same thing-our room wasnt available as we had booked, but we would be upgraded. This time however, we came out on top (well not quite-the $25,000 Bridge Suite wouldve been tops). The staff was a little better, but when you consider what youre paying, they fall way short.

Atlantis

Been to Atlantis a few times and pretty sure you cannot use beach or pool unless you're a guest. Cab ride is about 10 mins. cost maybe $10.00.

I just returned from a cruise in the Bahamas. The Sovereign of the Seas. When we docked in Nassau, my boyfriend, my daughter, and I went off on our own. We strolled the streets for a while. Every other step we were approaced by someone "not selling anything". Felt very uncomfortable. Walked through the straw market. That is a dump. Every aisle has the same thing. Left very quickly. We decided to take a cab ride to Paradise Island. A cab ride to the island is $4 per person. The cabby dropped us off at the beach. Stood there for several minutes looking lost. Decided to go back to Nassau. Once we got back we started walking back to the ship. We saw several people from our group being approached by the Natives(Cab drivers) offering a tour of Nassau and Atlantis. Originally we bypassed this offer, just leary on what was being offered. We told the group to take them up on the offer. There was no way they were going to get around Nassau without knowing where they were going. So, we too joined. There were 31 of us. We took three vans. They toured through Nassua, the rich and poor areas. Took us to a market (similar to the straw market, not as big). The cab drivers claim the only business this market gets is what they bring them. While driving, the cab drivers also give history of the Bahamas and certain areas we were in. It was quite educational. Then they took us to Atlantis. We toured Atlantis, the aquarium is beautiful. The is was part of the $20.00 fee we paid the cab. When finished the cab drives took us back to Nassau. They will leave you there too, if you want to stay and go the the beach. If so, then you have to pay $4 for a cab ride back.
If you choose this "excursion" ask for Doctor Feelgood. Enjoy your trip.

i did this back in july 2004 and you can go in and purchase a wrist band allowing you use of pools and waterslides, however food and drink is not available.

NOT SURE ABOUT THE PRICE OF A CAB BUT IT COST US $3.00 PER PERSON EACH WAY ON A WATER TAXI & THERE WAS NO WAIT.
