We usually bring around $100 per day at least and divide it up with a few travlers you don't want to do that, the cash will work. Also remember, you can use checks, but if credit cards for purchases on the islands, most major ones are accepted. If paying the ship crew with cash, I have that seperate and all divided up, so no hassles running around the ship the last day changing bills, etc. If your tips are automatically going on a credit card, then less cash to have to bring, I also like that. If you have travelers checks, they can be cashed onboard, with no problem.
I was thinking about bringing $500. cash for airports, cruise ports, casino, etc. I don't know whether to bring cash or mostly travelers cheques and only $50. or so cash. Any thoughts?
Ask yourself this simple question: Can I afford to lose my cash? If yes, carry a lot of cash. If no, carry a small amount of cash ($100 or so) and take the rest in travelers cheques (that way if they are lost or stolen you cna get your money back). You can cash the travelers cheques as you need to. Also, travelers cheques don't expire (well nether does cash) so you can always save them for another trip (that's what i usually do).
One good thing about RCI is that if you need more cash you can go to the casino and they will let you get cash and charge it to your Sign and Sail card. There is no fee for doing this. (They probably think you are going to gamble it away!) We do this and then we get our 1% back from our Discover Card.
You will undoubtedly need more than the $50 cash for cab rides, tipping the porters and people who bring you room service, and buying small things on the islands.
Have a great cruise!

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
It depends on how much money you are planning to bring. I have always used travelers cheques. If I needed cash, they were cashed onboard. We used our card on the ship but the travelers cheques came in handy for money needed on the islands. We also have pre and post stays at hotels so the cheques were great for me.
