Default Cruisng the Canal with Kuki - Radiance - DAY 5

Radiance – Day 5

When reading my daily reports one should bear in mind that I am of course describing my own cruise experience, from my own perspective. Less than half way into the cruise I’m not attempting to review or “rate? the cruise at this early junction.

When the cruise ends I will be writing an “objective? review for CruiseMates, attempting to go into more detail about what all, or most, cruisers can expect to find on their cruise. Many of the points I talk about in these daily reports are subjective. So, with that caveat, let’s get on with the cruise.

Day 5 is a 25 hr. day. On a transit from the east coast to the west coast we gain a total of 2 hours, as we move through time zones. We enjoyed a room service breakfast on the balcony this morning. The order once again came quickly, and the food was still hot when it arrived.

After breakfast we moved topside by the central pool, but by about 11 AM rain showers developed, so we took some cover. Mrs. Kuki happened on to a MahJong game going on, and got an invitation to join, so I left her, and the “clanking? of tiles, to explore the ship a bit more while the rain continued.

At 12 Noon Captain Lokling came on the public address system to tell us we’re in the middle of nowhere, and no one knows exactly where. It’s rather nice to have a standard Noon announcement made with some humor.

As I strolled around the ship, it’s obvious just what a pretty ship the Radiance is. She is in excellent condition, and her finishing and furnishings sparkle in all public areas. I took an elevator today for the first time in the cruise, and therefore realized today is Thursday. RCI changes a “plaque? in the floors of the elevators each day which tells you what day of the week it is. I love this feature because it simply reminds us that we cruisers brain cells turn to mush pretty quickly.

The “Centrum? on the Radiance is truly the hub of the ship; Soaring 8 Decks high, with a “balcony? area on each of the decks to view the action below. On the bottom level there’s music of some sort being offered from early morning until about 11 PM at night. Some times it’s the wonderful Rosario Strings, others classic guitar players, or a pianist. But, whoever is entertaining there seems to draw a crowd to this very popular venue.

I find the pastel color schemes used in décor of the public areas to be very calming, and with the use of an abundance of marble, and tile work, a rich ambience is established.

After less than an hour of rain the sun began to shine through again, and the open decks on the ship once again filled with passengers setting out to work on their tans and enjoy the day. I spent a bit of time in the casino this afternoon. It would be so much better if they gave tax deductible receipts for donations. I followed up my bit of casino time with a wonderful afternoon nap on our balcony.
I’ve noticed that last 2 days the “Shops of the Centrum? have set up “sale? tables at the entrance to the Winjammer Café. This morning was their watch sale. Frankly I find it annoying that they’re turning a thoroughfare into a shopping area. If people want to shop they’ll go to the shops, and taking the merchandise to the shoppers, though it may make good business sense, does make one feel like you’re in a mall, not on a ship. Particularly on this ship, where there’s only one entrance to the Windjammer Café, this strategy does clog the area with extra traffic as well.

Tonight was another pre-dinner headliner show in the Aurora Theater tonight, which we passed on attending, as we’ve seen this performer, Judy Kolba, on previous cruises. After late seating dinner, at 10:30 was the Love & Marriage game show. I ended up in the middle of a little run of luck in the casino, so missed it, but Mrs. Kuki said it was good… as these passenger participation shows normally are.

I spoke to the ship’s Group Coordinator today about arranging for our CruiseMates cocktail party for the day after tomorrow, as we’re transiting the Panama Canal. Because it’s a small group of CruiseMates on this sailing, and since we have an extended balcony on the stern, I wondered about having cocktails on our balcony. The group coordinator thought it was a wonderful idea, and talked to the bar manager and chef, and then came to our cabin to give us some menu options. That’s really excellent service! And we’re all set for what should be a great Canal party the day after tomorrow!

Tomorrow’s port of call is Limon, Costa Rica, and 6 of us are going to try and walk off the pier and see if we can arrange a private sight seeing tour. On our last visit to Costa Rica we did the white water rafting tour, which was probably the most fun and exciting excursion I’ve ever done. While I was ready to book it again on this cruise, Mrs Kuki (who had to talk me into it last time) said she’d prefer not to do it again. And, of course, what Mrs. Kuki wants…. lol.

BTW.. CyberCabin is brutally slow. It's a good thing it's sold by all inclusive package, because by the minute use would have made me "Kuki"

Kuki: I just love following along with you. Having just been on Radiance, I can picture everything you are describing on the ship. Isn't the little girl who is the group coordinator a sweetheart? I had the pleasure to meet her when we were onboard. She took very good care of us also. Please stop by the Seaview and have something yummy for me today, okay?

Really enjoying your posts from the Radiance. You paint with words a wonderful picture of the ship. Thank you.

The CruiseMates party on your balcony, going thru the Canal, sounds like SO MUCH FUN. Toast a least one drink to DW and I.

Have a great day in Costa Rica.

Kuki - I'm reading this at work & busted out laughing when you mentioned the bit about the Captain saying we're in the middle of nowhere.

I explained it to a few co-workers, but since they've never been on a cruise before, they gave me blank stares. Flew right over their heads.

Hello Kuki,
Just found this thread. You lucky dog. We just the booked the Radiance r/t to Hawaii from San Diego thru Nancy for next April. Hope you take plenty of pictures as the anticipation is already building. Also, is there a specific lounge for cigar smoking besides Hollywood Odyssey after 10 ? Have a great cruise and tell Mrs. Kuki we said hi. Mike and Robin Kitchens ( bucket brigade )

Hi All. Just thought I'd add a note onto Kuki's thread.
We've had a great morning in Puerto Limon Costa Rica. We decided to do the bus, river(canal), train tour, and are really glad we did. Our guide was a sweetheart and filled our heads with a great deal of information about the country. On the canal tour we had very comfortable seats on a barge type boat with a roof and open side windows. It was exciting to get to see Howler monkeys, Spider monkeys and a sloth as well as many different birds.

kuki's done a great job covering the things going on aboard ship. It really is a beautiful ship with a great staff.

It's been great fun to have Paul and Peggy and Sharon and Larry at our table for early sitting each night. We had two new couples join us the other night, and we're having a great time with them too. Now I just have to find that Kuki Moose and get some CM cards to give them.

Phyll
