makes you wonder who was in that lifeboat prior to the blaze...

That's really sad...

Dave,

Reports of a fire in a lifeboat that blackened side of ship above it while in Cozumel the other day.

Unfortunately, the ship's boats do require flammable liquids -- their fuel. Proper handling of fuel should prevent this sort of incident, but the combination of spillage and some source of ignition (a cigarette tossed over the side from a balcony above and blown into the boat, for example) could cause this sort of fire.

It does appear that the fire was pretty well contained. A couple coats of fresh paint will take care of the black ont he side of the ship, and it's fairly easy to clean the balconies and to replace their furnishings. The repairs to the affected boat probably will be more extensive -- they actually might he to replace it.

BTW, modern cruise ships actually carry significant extra lifeboat and liferaft capacity so one boat out of commission won't disrupt operations.

Norm.

Hey DTW,
Where do you get your info and pics? I am leaving on Enchantment on Saturday and called my travel agent when I saw your post. She states this is bogus and RCI knows nothing about a fire on the boat...Hmm....

Hey DTW
Your integrity is intact, I found the original report ( in espanol) online from the 30th, sounds like the rank and file of RCI were not informed. Hopefully because it was minor and won't affect my cabin, just above the flames! Deck 8, total midship starboard! Hopefully TS Chris won't be the second blow to our smooth sail later this week.

Thanks for all your informative posts, your info on Sovereign was right on for our first cruise last year.

Yes, the report I found was in Spanish also. You will have a great trip. This is no big deal but thought it was noteworthy.

Thanks again, and since you are the pro...
I am horribly sensitive to lots of smells, particulary smokey and purfumey smells. What do you suggest I do to make sure that my cabin is odor/smoke free when I board? This is our first cruise springing for the balcony, etc. I cannot tolerate the odor of chemicals or smoke for 5 days. This is my only 5 day vacation for the year with my family, I hope the room can be as sweet as we planned.

Thanks for your sage wisdom,
Glasshalfflull99

dear "glass" - the fresh sea air will help clear any smells and the crew will clean, scrub and de-odorize your cabin very throughly. SInce you are sensitive to smells, the best thing for smoke smell is a product called Citrus Magic, it has a nice fresh orange scent and it really works to eliminate smoke smell- you spray it on anything that smells smokey
