Default CELL PHONES

Please don't laugh if this is a silly question, but these ships seem to have everything on board and was wondering if they have a cell tower. Will be cruising from NJ to Bermuda and was wondering if cell phones get reception?

Irish:

Thanks for the informative links. Love em or hate em, the phones are something that the majority of cruising customers have wanted. Many cruise lines are rightfully adopting policies on where phones can and cannot be used but I personally appreciate the fact that the service is available. However, like any tool it needs to be responsibly used.

There is a current and heated debate going on among cruisers about phone usage. I remember the same heated exchanges going on a few years ago when Internet caf├ęs took over card rooms and other areas on ships and I have personally had some strange looks and a few comments from people who see me using my laptop by the pool. I guess my quiet keyboard disturbs them over the Calypso music.

Take care,
Mike

I guess you need to be careful when in port to make sure you don't synch to the ship's cell. One could be in for some unexpected charges.

We expected to be able to use our cell phones while in ports (St. Martain, St. Thomas and San Juan) but our phones didn't have service (Nextel). Other people were able to use theirs. We were disappointed but we survived. 9 days without contact! That was a record!

Default No service for some Nextel, Vorizon & T-Mobile

The ship board cell systems are automatically turned OFF when in port.
If your cell phone (or home network) does not support GSM, your phone won't work onboard the cruise ships that are equipped with the new Cingular systems. It must be one of those multi-band digital phones with GSM. They've been pretty much standard on Cingular for 3-4 years.

"The bulk of CDMA and GSM are working perfectly. The only remaining issue that can be inconvenient to the passengers is that Verizon isn't participating. All the major carriers in the U.S. are participating, plus 250 other carriers from around the world, with the notable exception of Verizon." So what if you have a Verizon phone? "It doesn't work," Marjerison says flatly. "If you go to Antigua or Barbados and your carrier doesn't have a roaming agreement, it's not going to work," he explains, and a cruise ship, in this respect, is no different.

Irish,

Thank you so much for your response and your knowledge. You have been the most helpful person to me whenver I ask question on this board.

Also, thanks for the great pics of the owners suite for the Explorer. My family and I enjoyed seeing the pics and now know what to expect.

Thank you again,

The Enchantment is NOT on the list in the link that I provided. She does not have it, that's why it did not work.
