Default BIRTH CERTIFICATE QUESTION

i renewed my passport but if it doesn't come in time, i have my birth certificate as a back-up. i don't know if mine is worn out because its 30 years old but is it supposed to look like a really bad, poor quality xerox copy with the "seal" that is BARELY raised or indented that you cannot read what it says? haha!

It doesn't cost much to get another copy of a "raised seal" birth certificate. I would apply for one if I were you, just to be on the safe side.

my cruise is 12/4 so it's cutting it pretty close. im mailing out my passport renewal tomorrow and i already ordered a new copy of my birth certificate online today. both don't guarantee within 6-8 weeks, anything could happen! so that's why i'm worried that the only thing i have is my current birth certificate. last resort, i have to pay triple the $$ to have my passport expedited in 24 hours!! gosh, what a ripoff!

I cruised with my way older brother and his birth certificate was in shambles; it is the same one my mom gave him when he turned 15 to go get his restricted Driver's license; he has used the thing for three cruises now and it has worked each time; I tease him and told him that the paper they used in the old days just doesn't hold up like the new stuff.

As long as it any hint of a raise seal you will be fine. Sailing 12/4 you wont need the passport

We put that "raised seal" to bed weeks ago. The BC DOES NOT have to have a raised seal.

I sailed to Bermuda back in August and took my 18 year old niece with me. When we reached the pier she realized that she forgot her birth certificate. Upon check-in an official looking gentleman came over, asked her where she was born, had her fill out a very simple form/statement, he signed it and we were onboard in no time. Talk about Homeland Security!!!

RCI and I'm sure all other cruise lines are consistent on this one: you'll need either the original birth certificate or "certified copy", plus a picture ID card issued by a federal, state, or local government agency.

If someone lucks out with a pier official, good for them, but I wouldn't press my luck on this one. It's just not the way you want to start off your cruise vacation.

If you can't wait for your Passport, contact your state's Vital Statistics department and ask them how fast you can acquire a certified copy of your birth certificate. Good luck and good sailing

Steve - Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't suggesting that you should take a chance at the pier, I was just sharing our experience.

However, I do know that if I need to get a new, official birth certificate in a short period of time that I can just visit my local elected official's office and have them process my request quickly - I can have a new one in under 5 days. I work for an agency in Pennsylvania where we need a copy of our client's BC to prove eligibility for benefits, so we take advantage of this system all the time. Maybe it works this way in other States, too - it can't hurt to call and ask.

Here in Pittsburgh, you can obtain a "raised seal" birth certificate if you go downtown and request one in person. Or you can do it via mail and have it back within a week.
