Default QUESTION FOR THE BOARD

When a ship fills the pool with Ocean/Sea water, is the water stagnant, treated with some chlorine, or is it circulated constantly with more Ocean/Sea water?

Thanks

Well, first off, it's usually filtered so there's no chance of getting dirt or fish or whatever else that is not dissolved into the pool, then it's treated with chlorine just like the water in a pool ashore to kill bacteria that you or others might leave behind. The pools also have filtration systems, just like swimming pools at hotels and health clubs (and most private pools of any size) ashore.

Thanks Norm,

Once they fill the pool with water, how long do they keep that water in the pool before dumping it?

I understand the fitlering, the chlorine, etc but once they do all of that I wonder if the pool water remains for days (like a pool on shore) or whether they dump it, clean the pool and refill it (and how often that occurs?).

It depends. The pools tend to lose water through spilage when there's moderate motion, so thay have to top them off quite often. I don't know whether there's a rigorous schedule for draining, srcubbing, and refilling or not, but I have yet to see a dirty pool on a cruise ship so they obviously do at least on an "as needed" basis.

As far as I recall, all the salt-water pools that I have seen on ships have been drained at night. I also don't remember any chlorine being added to them.

It's been my observation that the pools are filled with filtered seawater.

On RCCL ships, the pools are drained every evening, covered with a net, and then refilled early in the morning.
