Default It's offical... 3rd Freedom Class ship named.....

December 21, 2006

RCI Names Third Freedom-Class Ship (Drumroll, Please)....

Royal Caribbean has announced the name of its third Freedom-class vessel ... Independence of the Seas!

Independence of the Seas, slated to launch in May of 2008, will be a sister ship to the 154,407-ton, 3,634-passenger Freedom of the Seas and under-construction Liberty of the Seas, due out in May of 2007. Independence will share the title of "world's largest cruise ship," and includes innovations found on its older siblings such as the FlowRider, H2O Zone, boxing ring, cantilevered whirlpools and 14-person Presidential Family Suite; new features have not yet been announced.

Sure, we had a sneaking suspicion the line's next ship would be called "Something" of the Seas. But with cruise lines continuing to use names that are more often similar than not (Norwegian Jewel and Jewel of the Seas, Carnival Liberty and Liberty of the Seas, as examples), we were anxiously awaiting what that "Something" would be -- and think Independence, not found elsewhere in the industry (at least recently), is a nice change of pace.

The theme here is not patriotic as one might guess; according to a company statement, the monikers of the Freedom-class ships (Freedom, Liberty and Independence) are meant to represent guests' "freedom to create their own unique adventure by choosing multiple onboard options, from active pursuits such as rock climbing, surfing or ice skating; to more relaxing experiences, such as spa treatments, fine dining or world-class entertainment."

Independence of the Seas is currently under construction at Aker Yards in Turku, Finland.

Thank, Dave! I'm looking forward to being able to sail on one of the new Freedom class ships! Any one, wherever, whenever. Alas... I have to wait a while.

I am doing Mariner this May so I think May '08 will be the time. I am trying to do this in a logical progression... Song of America to Sovereign class to Vision class to Voyager class to Freedom class.

You might get an idea as to when by looking at the Liberty of the Seas. She is due out in May 2007 and you can book her now. So, I would guess about 6 to 8 months before.

Where are all these huge ships going to be docking? Port overcrowding is already an issue!

Independence of the Seas - "IOS" sounds like something I used to have to do in school oops no that was ISS (in school suspension).

We're looking at a family cruise in '08, so Independence would
be a likely choice. We absolutely loved the Freedom, and can't
wait to book that class again.

Might have to sneak in another Freedom class cruise before
'08.

Are all 3 ships doing the same itinerary? That's kinda silly. Split them up & let others experience these wonderful ships. Send one to Europe, 1 for the Caribbean & one someplace else.

With these three out, maybe we will see a Voyager class doing 4-5 nighters. I see the Navigator will be next fall and winter. Similar to the Enchantments current itinerary.

These ships are so big I can't imagine only 4 nights. Take three days just to find your way around then have to get off.
