Default Cruise Tours In Italy

We have a group of 8 cruising around Italy in July 2007. We are visiting Rome, Portofino, Livorno, Messina, Venice, Naples as well as Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia. Should we book tours in advance with tour companies instead of going through RCCL? Do we need to book tours in these cities or just wing it? Thanks in advance

I recently heard a story about a group of folks who booked their own excursion while abroad. They got back just in time to see their ship pulling away. They were then on their own to get back to the ship. Had they been on a ship's excursion, the ship would have waited for them. I always keep that in mind when thinking of my excursions. I'm sure there are many folks who will disagree with me...but I'm a pretty cautious person.
