Default Grandeur Refurbished / Stretched?

Any recent cruisers on the Grandeur who can report on her condition? Also read somewhere where the ship would be "stretched"? When we last cruised her in the Spring, I thought some sprucing up was in order.

She was drydocked and refurbed in the Spring. Fixed the dent and the starboard rudder, upgraded the Windjammer and quite a bit of the public areas, replaced the bedding. That about covers it. The stretch could still happen, but isn't likely, while the plans still exist, they haven't contracted the stretch or allocated any money for it. Last Fall, the Captain of the Grandeur said that corporate felt the money could be much better spent on new construction.

Thanks for your reply. We were on Grandeur early Summer and felt it needed some sprucing up then, so we're leery of booking again. Will have to give it more thought.

I will be on the Grandeur with some friends in February. It may need to refurbished again after we cruise...

I have been is sister Enchantment before and after the stretch. The best part about it to me was the second pool and larger main pool deck and extra pool bar. 8)

I'm curious, what did you think needed sprucing up? I've been on Grandeur, Mariner and Radiance, and felt that Grandeur is in at least as good a shape as the other two.

Things like worn carpet and furniture. Also the flooring on our balcony (whatever the flooring material was) was totally worn through in spots. Things like that. And while I can't say it was unclean, it just didn't "shine" like the other ships we've been on (12 cruises to date). Not that it ruined our good time -- haven't had a bad cruise yet! Enjoy those future cruises you have listed! We're still trying to decide on the next one......

Funds have been allocated but the problem is to find a slot at a suitable yard. And right now the DG conversions for all of RCCL´s GTVs has highest priority.

They're not converting the Radiance class to diesels, they're adding a diesel generator for use in port. A gas turbine uses nearly as much fuel idling as it does at full power, so using a GT while in port and lightly loaded is a waste of fuel and money. They're backfitting the Radiance class with a diesel to run while in port, the diesel can run off the same fuel as the GT, and is much more efficient at lower loading.

MV = Motor Vessel, which are what most RCL ships are

GTV = Gas Turbine Vessel, which is how the Radiance class are marked, take a look at the hull, it's GTV Radiance of the Seas.

The diesels are not supposed to run on gasoil but rather on heavy fuel.

Yes, only two RCL ships are TS to the best of my recollection

That is from the sitcom Gilligan's Island and the SS Minnow was the boat they got shipwrecked on. My sister named my first boat the Minnow because I sank it at her dock, this one is Minnow of the Seas. 8)

Actually, M/B stands for motor boat. My boat sank because I tied it to the dock with one line with the tide going out. When we came back from the bar, the tide changed direction, was coming in and pushed the boat under the dock where it swamped. No lives were lost and we were able to salvage it the next morning.

Here is MSBJ aboard the MB Minnow of the Seas... 8)

Ahhh, true, the diesels on the rest of RCL's ships run on heavy fuel oil, and they're actually figuring out a system to somehow inject biodiesel into the fuel stream on these ships to help reduce sulfur emissions and make a statement about environmental concern. The beauty of a diesel though, is it will run on most any oily, flammable fuel. A diesel will quite happily run on kerosene, which is basically the same formula as #1 diesel or #1 home heating oil. My Liberty CRD is designed to run on #2 diesel, but in an emergency I can fill it will Jet A or kerosene to get where I need to go. The British and US military are actually developing diesel motorcycles so that they can eliminate the need to carry gasoline to forward operating areas. Pretty much every military internal combustion engine runs on JP-5 (the military equivalent of Jet-A or Jet-A1) and developing the motorcycle will further reduce strain on the supply chain.

Right now the MB Minnow of the Seas has three decks. The upper deck, the casting deck and the bridge deck. I am trying to avoid adding a swimming pool like the first Minnow. Before this boat is stretched, it will likely be sold off to another line when the next new build is floated out. With a capacity of 5 and cruising speed of 35 knots it does not produce much revenue. The new build will be larger, longer and have accomodations for 2 in the main cabin. It will also boast a specialty dining room and observation lounge. 8)
