Default How do we get around in Venice??

We are booked on the Splendour for a 10-day Med cruise at the end of November. The cruise starts in Venice and we are arriving a day early. Never having been to Venice before, we are concerned about ground (canal?) transportation from the airport to a hotel and from there to the ship.

I have heard stories about folks debarking at a water taxi depot and then having to schlep their luggage a half-mile to a hotel. With my ruined back, I can barely walk that far, much less tote two weeks worth of suitcases.

Will someone please clue me in as to what to expect? My travel agent is less than helpful.

Thanks,
Doc

We have been in Venice and took the waterbus across the canal. When we got off the waterbus, there were porters with carts that would take your bags to the hotel. These are independent porters (not belonging to any particular hotel). The porter took our bags over stairs that would have been difficult for us to manuever, but he did it very well for a reasonable price.
Hope this helps and have a wonderful time.....Venice is beautiful and very unique. We certainly enjoyed it and very glad to have had the opportunity to see it.

Manuel

PS - Be sure to take a gondola ride.

.
Manuel is exactly correct, as the lovely Mrs. Jones and I experienced the same thing. The porters with the carts will take you to the hotel from the canal, and at a very reasonable cost. Have a great time in one of the worlds most unique, and beautiful cities.

Manuel & Ken .........

Thank you for your information. We have been sweating bullets after the story my brother told me about lugging suitcases up and down over bridges. I should have guessed - he was probably too cheap to hire a porter.

We can now embark with confidence!

I do not mean to put a damper on things. But we were in Venice around New Years for several days and I never saw a porter. I loved Venice, by the way. Perhaps porters are seasonal. I am not sure.

e-mail the hotel you are staying at and ask for their assistance with this..the porters are there but if you arrive late at night they probably won't be..make sure you wear comfortable shoes (sneakers work well).. because the cobblestones are uneven

if you get a chance seek out Tragicomica (near the San Toma boat stop) and watch them make a custom Carnevale mask (when I was there I purchase a mask like in the movie Casanova)..it takes a couple of hours to make and you just come back after sight seeing and pick it up

my artist friend that spends his summers in Venice and his winter in New Orleans always takes me to a seafood place in the Castello area where they serve an awesome seafood platter (crab, shrimp, octopus, squid, sea bass etc), every expensive, but very very good..Venice IMHO has great seafood but I can never remember eating any pasta ..if you find a pasta place let me know..if I come across the name of the seafood place I will e-mail you

you'll have a great cruise, and if you can take your gondola ride at sunset (very, very, very romantic)..if you are by nature an early riser, by all means if there is a open air market close to where you are staying, it's a great morning trip to see the locals obtain their food

I LOVE Venice, it's my favorite city on earth (next to New Orleans) 8)

Looks like the best way to get around here is in a shallow draft skiff...

Doc:

Please don't get discouraged about visiting Venice. Our stay there was very pleasant and everything went smooth. From what I have heard everyone who goes to Venice, falls in love with it.

In Admiral's post, he mentioned about doing the gondola ride at sunset as it is very romantic. My wife and I did the gondola ride on our anniversary at sunset. A memory that will stay with us forever!

Was kidding of course. I would love to go to Venice some day. Have not been fortunate enough yet. I will probably get to Venice, LA first since it is a lot closer and I don't need a passport.

Dave The Wave..Venice La was impacted by Katrina, but I will arrange for the Army Corp of Engineers to give you special permission to sail your boat to come and visit

Also, I believe your girl Brittany has some time on her hands now since she does not have to babysit to give you a guide tour

Great Idea! Thanks Venice! I never knew where it was until I looked on google maps. It seems just a dot on the delta.

big sports fishing town..there is not much too it, but the people that were born and raised there are determined to stay there.

I'm sure you'll fit right in ..you also need to visit Venice CA, which is a whole different world..just make sure you bring your weights so you can fit right in lifting on the beach

we here at CM, have an obligation to expand your horizons beyond your world of Florida and your loyalty to Royal Caribbean

p.s.. leave your Austin Powers outfit home when you come to visit

Yes, I know Venice CA from Pumping iron and would like to visit there as well. We have a Venice Florida also so it seems to be a common name for nice beach/water places.

Maybe now that Brittney has some time on her hands I can get her to come with me and do a Carnival Cruise out of NO. Carnival is probaly more her style and we could get a new tattoo together down on Bourbon St pre-cruise.

well, you could have her initials tatooed on your pectoral

seriously, New Orleans has often been called the Venice Italy of the United States (should be our sister city)..they both have Carnival, masked balls in February.. Catholic, both are below sea level, lots of corrupt politicians, a good rain floods the city and the streets are often dirty, they both depend on tourism, they are both infamous for parties...and..the great Dave The Wave would be comfortable in both citieis ..but only one currently has a Royal Caribbean ship calling on it
