Default Mega ships

Hello fellowcruisers,

Does anyone have an idea the reasoning behind the cruiselines making maga ships these days? Is it because they can get more fares over a given time period for slightly more expenditure, food, wages, fuel and possibly make a higher profit?

All of the above!! In the long run bigger the ship more money will be generated. they can add more features and be able to charge extra for it.

Default Mega Ships

Hi Earl,

Do you think that the cruiselines will do away with longer cruises and stick with just a 7-night cruise on the mega ships (with the exception of course of the Cunard ships)? We much prefer the longer cruises. A 7-night cruise is just not long enough!!

I think that sadly the cruise lines are going to keep the Mega-Ships in the 7-Night Western/Eastern/Southern, as that attracts more customers, With longer cruises, less people have the money to do them, so they use smaller ships.

No I don't think so. There are plenty of longer sailings out there and they are very popular. Holland America has plenty of 10 day 'warm weather' sailings and longer port intensive sailing all around the world, as do many other lines.

The profit motive is of course a primary reason. However I was tremendously impressed on a recent cruise on the Freedom OTS. There was so much to do and see on the ship and the fact that there were 4200 passengers (1000 of them kids) never intruded on our enjoyment aboard. They have figured out the secret of having different areas of the ship to cater to varying age groups without making the experience seem like a cattle car environment.
