State Dept. may have overcharged for passports

Over the past year, as the government issued nearly 14 million new passports, it collected at least $111.4 million more in passport fees than its stated costs, according to calculations by the AP based on figures from State Department and congressional investigators.

I think it's terrible that our own goverment, gouges people who need to get this document, and does so qietly! A pity ......

Good article! We just got passports for my wife and two boys 14 & 17 and had to renew mine. Ouch! Although I was surprised when their passports came in within 3 weeks and mine took a week and a half.

With all the money they spend it has to come from somewhere. If they don't get us one way they will get us another.

Well said Manuel. I know I paid my share last year, including renewal of the lovely Mrs. Jones' (Vita) passport. Our governmant loves to throw money down a hole,,,IMO, but it's still the best on Earth,,,except maybe Australia........Oh heck,,,don't get me started.

I have been hearing now that they may not be required until early summer 2008. Anyone have any updated info on this?
