Default Grandeur of the Seas & Alcohol

I am going on my first cruise alone for my last year of college during spring break. I am 23 years old and obviously will be drinking most likely. I plan on buying drinks once and a while to help the bartendars on their pay, but I cant drink for the whole cruise for 5 days with the prices.

I have been reading about getting alcohol on board by mouthwash, just loading it on and wrapping it up on my checked luggage etc...

However, I recently found some forums mentioning that I can get alcohol delivered to my room from Royal Caribbean. its the Bon Voyage Dept at 1-800-794-6225 and someone said you tell them the bottle you want and they charge it and it will be waiting for you. Is this still true?? If so great, and does anyone know if they are outrageous or not?

If not, what is the best way to bring on board. I really don't have a lot of money as a college student and can't spend 7 or 8 dollars on each drink plus the ridiculous 15% charge per drink. I was a bartender for a while and even I think this is pretty crazy.

Like I said I was told by people who travel a lot to just wrap up a bottle really good and I should be fine. I'm of age and most of the crew really don't care. Also I should tip the luggage people decent??

Any suggestions or thoughts. How do people who drink!! and who want to save some $$$ do a 5 day cruise? I'm not really trying to cheat anything or anyone and don't want to get into trouble and loss my trip, but it just seems crazy that they don't allow even 1 bottle per person or something. Hell even Disney does that.

don't waste time hiding it in other containers, like mouthwash bottle etc; they know those tricks

it is hit or miss whether or not you will get the alchol on board HOWEVER, considering the fact that you are of college age and you are going on the cruise during spring break, there is a good chance you would have your stash removed from your luggage.

Like she said. Don't worry about the mouthwash bottle, ect... pack a bottle in your luggage. Plastic is best, lighter and less likely to break. Drinks are NOT 7-8 dollars! $3 for a beer and about $5 for a cocktail. Unless you drink sissy drinks like Pina Coladas and Daquiries.

Sister got back from GEM she paid $33. for 3 Martini's at the Martini bar. That is pretty high. I'm not a martini drinker but are Martini's that high on all ships?

martinis are over rated. Pour some vodka in a glass and you have a martini. The fancy names and flavors are where they get you. I drink vodka and tonic or soda and they are like $4.75 pls tip. Call brands a little more. They are ALWAYS strong (more than a few ounces) too.

Foo foos on the Ryndam were 6.75
The Long Island Iced Teas were worth it. Big and strong!
A six pack of Corona cost 19 bucks...domestic was 18 bucks.
Vodka and Collins in the Casino bar was 4.50.
Our bar set up cost 127.00 (2 bottles vodka, 2 tequilia)

Bought some Tequilia at Sammy's Cabo Wabo and tried to turn it in when reboarding...the guy said no thanks and waved me by!

The kind with an umbrella
More sugar than booze.
LI tea is technically Foo foo but has mucho boozo in it
A regular mixed drink is the kind that you can really taste the booze and prevents you from guzzling them down. For me, anyway.
Foo foos have silly names and are so sweet you don't notice the booze....until you get up.

My definition.

We got to be pretty friendly with the guys in the casino bar.
My wife would order a glass of vodka or gin...and then go back and ask for a splash of vermouth!

A martini by any other name...cost another two bucks!

Wow thanks for all the replies,

Please do report back with the drink cost for the Grandeur of the Seas.

I was thinking of just packing a plastic liter like you said and hopefully just get waved through or get my luggage.

The only thing that worries me is when we are going is college spring break time here in Florida so I don't know.

Anyway, does anyone know if you can buy alcohol on the ship and have them put it in your cabin for the cruise and not after?

Thanks again.

Hank: if you buy booze in port or on the ship (full bottles) they do not let you have them until the night before debarkation, so as to keep everyone from drinking it onboard

just pack a plastic liter and hope for the best

we cruise Feb 28, 2007; so I will try to remember to bring back a drink/bar menu with all the prices.

On NCL and HAL we had them arrange a bar set up.
Cost is 30-40 dollars per bottle depending on the type of booze.
All set up and waiting for us in our cabin.

I took photos of the drink menu but the flash failed; here is what I can remember:

mixed drinks ranged from: 4.75 (for the cheap stuff) to 6.75 plus tip
speciality drinks $6.75 and up if you added top shelf stuff
bucket of beers was $27.68 for 5 beers this included tips.

for instance, a Vodka (Absolute) and tonic was 6.33 in the South Pacific Lounge; this included the tip.

Just got back from a Grandeur cruise. We heard they checked luggage and found a lot of liquor in water bottles and mouthwash bottles which they kept. Also, when a large group boarded after a day in Cozamel, they were throwing beer bottles and deck chairs overboard so the captain put them off the ship. Then after a day in Progresso, some guys got in a fight by the pool and they were put off. The last night at sea, they caught a guy throwing deck chairs over so he was arrested and turned over to Tampa police. These kids were given several warnings. For the next trip they increased security guards by 30. Have a good time but don't overdo it with the booze and weed. The Captain has to see that everyone enjoys the trip they paid for, not just the spring breakers.

We left 03/03. Our cruise had several hundred spring breakers on board. A lot were under 21. They were pretty wild. The cruise leaving 03/08 was going to have 1600 spring breakers onboard, that's why security was beefed up. The captain wasn't putting up with that stuff. Once they were put off the ship they had to get home on their own; that was probably pretty tough in Progresso.
In Cozamel they had to bring some of them back from Senor Frogs in wheelchairs.
People cheered when they were deboarded. It was not pleasent being around them and they took over the pool area and hot tubs.
