Default Should I get a spray tan?

Has anyone ever gotten a spray tan before vacation? I'm so pale I would like to get a base tan, and I won't go in a tanning bed.
Will it be messy?

it will not be a base tan, it will be a fake tan- meaning you can still burn.... EASILY!! If you want a base tan, you have to use the beds/stand up.

Spray tans only last up to a week and can be streaky or orange depending on where you go- the only way to get a base tan is the booth!!

Spray tans are great and at first they seem really dark but after 8 hours you can shower and it will lighten. I always ask for a medium one. As you go in the sun it will deepen and you will look healthier and slimmer.

as the others have mentioned a spray tan is strictly cosmetic it is not a base tan. It would have to have an SPF factor to give you any kind of protection

Also be careful with the spray tan if you want to get a massage. My friend got one and when they used the oils on her the tan started to rub off. I guess the masseuse (sp?) didn't know what to do.....except say "excuse me ma'am but your tan is coming off" I felt bad but I have to say it must have been funny. So just keep that in mind.

It seems you asked this question already somewhere else. It will wash off and look silly.

Im actually considering it since I just booked another cruise for in 5 weeks. Last year and previous years I used tanning beds religiously, but I have decided to ban myself for the future! That was until it is middle of winter here my white @$$ faces the caribbean in a few weeks! But I will try my will power as best as I can and not subcomb to the beds!

Im young, but I can already find new wrinkles I didnt have the year before! And new skin spots and freckles!! Yiiiikes!

So I might "try" the spray... if you go first, let me know how it worked out and if you came out looking like streaked copper!!

Default Spray tan? Sure!

Depends what you want. I've been spray tanning for about 2 years. Used to be a 'sun goddess' but ended up with skin cancer. Told by the Dermatologist it was the sunning done in adulthood (since I never burnt, didn't do the crazy stuff of youth!! hehe!) but all the bad burns I got (and I sure did!) as a kid. Messes up the DNA and comes out later. In any event, not to add fuel to the fire, I don't 'bask' in the sun anymore, but I still go to the beach and do what I want. I hear you on 'white' ... for me, it's like the 'white whale' look in a bathing suit .... so tried Mystic. Supposed to be the best. I disagree somewhat from other posts, BUT you DO need to be careful. First, yes, it is NOT a base, so you CAN burn. Use sunblock or screen and it won't harm the tan. No clue on the massage, but makes sense. Any mineral based cream, shower bath, etc. will fade the tan. But, you can buy their products (or others cheaper) as long as they don't have alot of mineral oil. They also have an 'in between' cream/foam you can use to extend the tan. And, I've also used Loreal in between. Neither the Mystic Tan or the Loreal is orange or streaky ... that was years ago. They've made vast improvements. As a matter of fact, when I first started using the 'fake' tan I got more compliments on what a great tan I had ... as a matter of fact the last time I cruised, as I was boarding, one of the RCCI employees complimented my 'lovely tan' as I was boarding the boat!! In the beginning I was self-conscious, but now I think it's funny and tell people .... 'it's fake'!! Do yourself a favor and stay out of the beds, use sunscreen in the sun ... you may not get the skin cancer, but both really do damage your skin. I see the Dermatologist about every 6 weeks ... had many surgeries, mostly on my feet, hands and legs, BUT I haven't had melanoma, so I'm very fortunate and keep on top of it since the basal and squamous can turn into that if not treated. So, I keep on top of it and I'm doing just fine! Small price to pay in long run!! The other thing I find is this is a new freedom for me ... used to be I HAD to have my hour in the sun every day .... now my husband and I just go and do whatever!! It can be expensive, but I really only do it before we go away (like now) and during the warm weather months. I got a membership and can freeze it when I'm not using it regularly. I WILL tell ya tho ... went in the other day for the spray and it has been COLD here, I wanted nothing more than to lay on that nice warm tanning bed instead of being sprayed (it's cold!) .... but the flip side is that it's only a few minutes and you're on your way. I say go for it!! You want to look good and feel good, and you're worth it!! Just my opinion and experience!

Good for you" mmomom". I too have had so many skin cancers that I stopped counting. The Dermatologist and Plastic Surgeon have files like phone books on me. Spray tan if it makes you feel better. I am a pasty white guy with hairy legs and could not care less. Enjoy

Yes fake tan is the way to go. So much on the market today sprays, lotions, bronzers, etc. Tanning beds and the sun does alot of damage to the skin. Also the sun ages the skin faster.

Yes, I think it's great what they have now (mystic spray is supposed to be the best, only one I've tried, so don't really know ... but L'oreal cream is good too, not orange or streaky .... just watch the use of other products, like moistureizers/bath gels with alot of mineral oil in there and DON'T forget the sunblock/screen when out in the sun long term or you WILL burn!) .... like I said, it's so much safer and saner for your skin (tho you couldn't have told me that years ago!! Live and Learn!) ..... plus it gives you more freedom .... don't have to allocate that 'sunning time' into your schedule!! If you try it, let me know what you think! I was an unbeliever at first too!! 8)

Loreal has some great products out there to give you that fake sun look and they are not that orangey fake look either. I also like the moistureizers with a hint of glow and color.
I like to put on my loreal products and hang out in the shade 8)

I agree fake tans are not ideal, but anyone who thinks getting a 'base tan' so they don't burn is the way to go is just fooling themselves. Anytime there is darkening of the skin from being in the sun that means there is DAMAGE to the skin! You may not burn so fast but you are damaging your skin just the same.

I myself am lilly white and I think it is time to stop being ashamed of it! Stay pale and walk proud. You don't need a tan (fake or otherwise) to show off to people to prove what a great vacation you've had. Kudos to stars like Nicole Kidman who prove you can be pale colored and beautiful at the same time.

I don't think any of this is a matter of 'showing off, being ashamed or even being proud' (none of which in my mind are positive characteristics) .... I think it's more like feeling and looking good to oneself, feeling better and putting your best foot forward ... sort of like when you dress to go out, if one thing puts a better 'look or feel' on, you go with that. Don't most people just like to look & feel their best? When I'm showing alot of skin, I just think a little tan looks better on me ... just like putting on make up, getting your hair done or wearing something more flattering than just sweat pants for a particular event. I'm not showing off, I'm just putting what I perceive to be my best foot forward. Neither do I need to be 'proud' of anything ... just comfortable with myself and who I am. If someone likes lilly white, they should stay that way .... and by the same token, if someone likes a little tan, they should be able to do that without any personal connotations of being ashamed, showing off or being proud! We're all different ... that's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream! And, although from personal experience, I can vouch for skin damage, once again as long you are aware of the risks, it's a personal choice. Just be careful, have fun and do what you feel comfortable with!

Everyone looks better with a tan and it is healthy. You get vitamin D from the sun it gets rids of the winter blahs. The melanin in your skin is your natural protecxtion from the sun. Burning is not good but a gradual and healthy tan is good for you and sexy.

Dave the wave is right...
There was just a clip on the news last week, that the sun is actually more of a benefit for you than a danger.
I don't know, I had skin cancer, but I think that might have been from baking no stop years ago with a sun reflector and baby oil with iodine!
lol!!!

I have to say that the sun is not good from a health or aging perspective, though tans do look good. You can get your vitamin D from a pill vs the sun, and there's a lot of tan alternatives. If you go in a booth, you're kinda paying for giving yourself wrinkles, skin cancer, etc. And, then you have to pay more later to try to remove the stuff (cancer or sun spots, etc).

Guess its a cheap alternative, but since I'm in the gym everyday and like the look of a tan, I use Jergens lotion every day with the "touch of color" and it gives a fairly natural tan and doesn't streak. And, with me, if it could streak, it would. Cause I too had the horror of the "orange tan" when a teenager.

And, sunblock really should be worn every day. There's a lot of new ones that don't feel greasy, etc. I don't know, I guess I've seen too many people go thru skin cancer.... the ozone layer is just not what it use to be..

Default Fake tan, sun & returned from the Freedom & going to

Ya, sunblock is good .... and a little 'fake' tan if you want it looks good too! Hear ya on the 'cancer' thing .... just had a reoccurance on a squamous that was removed so had to see this specialist called a Mohs surgeon .... we'll get that sucker taken care of the end of the month. They've made great strides with treatment, but my feeling is 'everything in moderation' .... sunlight is good for you .... just not 'baking in it'!! I've also been told that my condition I did NOT get in my adult 'sun-worshipping' years when I never burnt, but 'thought' I was getting a safe, gradual tan (even tho it still couldn't have been good and I have the wrinkles to show for it! hehe!!) but I'm told that alot of bad burns as a child or adolescent (which I had many) messes up the DNA and it comes out later in life. Sorta helped me with my 'guilt' complex after all the skin cancer appeared!! heh1! ANYWAY .... whatever you all chose, enjoy! We got back last month, well, actually 2 months ago now from our trip on the Freedom .... it was Fabulous! Met so many nice people .... loved just about everything .... the ports (not that crazy about Jamaica tho!) the ship, everything .... it was wonderful! Can't wait to go again ... but ya know .... as amazing as the Freedom is .... it IS big .... and I think I kinda like the 'Voyager Class' better .... just a tad smaller but basically the same layout. We've sailed the Adventure (my personal favorite) and the Explorer. Leaving in 2 weeks for a trip to Aruba .... not by sea .... got an Interval Exchange, so we're flying. Been there about 10 years ago, stayed at the Radisson on Palm Beach .... we'll be in Oranjestad at the Renaissance so it will be a little different with the location and all. Looking forward to seeing the ships arrive in the harbor!! Anyone got any good suggestions on restaurants, etc. .... we'll be there from the 17th to the 24th of April.

Yeah, I fell asleep and got a bad burn spring break one year and wouldn't be surprised if I got skin cancer there some day in the future. I've had one "pre-cancerous" mole removed or something like that. Such a fun topic

My guilt these days is Mommy guilt when I can't keep up with the sunblock on the kids when they are running in and out of the water.

We're looking forward to the Explorer this summer. Never been on Royal C before. I hate to fly so looking forward to just driving to port.

Hope everything works out with your skin cancer treatments and enjoy your upcoming vacation!

Trust me, if you know the chemicals involved, you would not want to do this.

Remember, this stuff gets absorbed by your skin...
