I have a friend who works for American. They also refer to US Air as US SCARE.
Even knowing that, I recently booked my son on a flight with them. Needless to say, there was a problem (to long of a story to type) on the day of the flight. I called the 800 number, got a refund and booked him on another airline.
I've flown on US air from CT, NYC to Florida, California and Texas.
Never EVER had a problem. The luggage excuse is a poor reason. ALL the airlines lose luggage. If you don't want your bags lost - ship it ahead of time.

thanks guys. i think i don't have much of a choice at this point, finance wise....
BUT
i am booking an early flight with only one connection that is an overnight flight. wish me luck and cross all digits and bits for me please and thank you!
I'm a travel agent, and they are the worst airlines...which makes us also refer to them as US Scare. If your flight is delayed, cancelled, etc, and you try to call, their reservations offices are located in India, Latin America, and the Phillipines, making it impossible to communicate.
We flew them a few years back down to Orlando for our cruise, and luckily we booked the day prior because we had a connection through Philadelphia in which they lost all of our luggage. We were in long pants because we're from Buffalo, NY and it was 35 degrees when we left, arrived in 90 degree heat with no shorts! Went to the store to buy clothes with the $25.00 stipend they gave for the day. Finally got our luggage to us that evening at midnight even though our flight landed at 1000am!
Oh, and the best part, they lost the luggage AGAIN on the return flight connecting through Philadelphia!
Wow,
It seems like a lot of people have had bad experiences with US Air. My wife and I fly them all of the time and really dont have any complaints. We only had them lose one piece of our luggage and it arrived later that night on a different flight.

My daughter flew round trip this week-end to D.C. on US Air and had no problems. I also have a friend who flew round trip back and forth to Spain several times and never had any problems. All airlines lose luggage.

Every airline has a nickname... so don't be put off by that.(see below for a list) You will usually always get a better price with a connection... and that is typically when "lost baggage" problems occur, especially if you have a very quick connect time. The more time between your connections the better the chances your bags will make it. Also... with more time between connections - the less likely you will misconnect as well.
US Air= US Scare
Northwest = Northworst
Airtran = Air trash
Delta = Doesn't Ever Leave The Airport
Southwest = Southworst
Continental = Can'tinental
AA = Always Awful
UA = Undeniably Awful
US Air and American West merged. The only issue that I have with them (and other airlines as well) is that you can only check one bag for free. Additional bags will cost you $25.
We have a short flight from LAX to LAS after our Nov 08 cruise. I paid $60 each for the tickets and it will cost me $100 to check two additional bags. That's $20 less than the cost of the tickets. I booked them because they were the cheapest even with the additional $100.
The price of fuel has forced airlines to go this route.
They also have a 3 star rating the same as United and Northwest and others.
SS Norway (12 times) '85 - '97; Radiance OS 06/01; Island Princess 11/04, Grand Princess 11/04/05, Golden Princess 7/21/06, Golden Princess 2/24/07, Explorer of the Seas 12/23/07, Island Princess 11/15/08
A couple years ago we flew them a group of of from WV to NV - on a business trip to Vegas and did not have any problem. It was the first time flying and that was my expected fear. Low and behold no problems on any lost luggage.
Try 1800flyeurope dot com. I just bought 4 one way tickets from Chicago to London fro $1,084 total. When I got the confirmation I realized we'd be flying on Virgin Atlantic and had I booked directly with Virgin one ticket would have cost more than all 4 did through 1800flyeurope.
BW... Use caution when booking tickets on the "cheap" dot com sites. There are typically lots of restrictions with those tickets because they are bulk fare tickets that they buy from the airline. What that means is because the ticket is so cheap...you usually are restricted to the flight you chose only (no standbys) and if you misconnect on any portion.. it is usually too bad so sad and you are now stuck. You will usually be referred back to the dot com you bought it from. I have personnally seen people who had these type tickets having to buy new tickets... which are now alot more expensive than the original ticket.
As far as I am concerned ALL the airlines stink, so you takes yer chances. I will only vouch for Jet Blue after they were the very last plane to take off from JFK in a blizzard last year (the airport was even shut down while we were on the runway) but they got us to San Juan (this for $69 per in January !) HOWEVER - you all know what happened to Jet Blue right after that-seven hours on the runway, no toilets, no water, etc. etc. So there ! Even SWA screwed up skipping maintenance. The end result of all this is I don't think it makes any big deal about which airline you fly just keep your fingers crossed ! Now I could tell you a real horror story about the short lived rebirth of PanAm . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
