As long as you are leaving and entering the US by ship, technically you do not need a passport, a govt. issued photo ID and proof of US citizenship (Birth Certificate or Naturalization Papers) is legal. However, a passport is preferred and highly recommended.

I NEVER take my passport off the ship with me. My ship card and my license seem to suffice just fine. The only problem I could think you would run into is if you miss the ship...just make sure you are back on time!

We just got off Explorer of The Seas May 17 Royal Caribbeans Websight says for Sea Travel you don't need a passport until the Summer 08 a passport is highly recommended. My daughters had there birth cert. and a photo State ID no problem when they went on the ship. But when we got home going through custums at Bayonne they really gave them a hard time saying they should have had a passport and it went into effect January 08 I told them what Royal Caribbean said but they didn't care and were really ignorant about the whole thing. What did they think they were going to keep my daughters there forever. They wouldnt even let me speak they were so rude. So I would get a passport not worth the aggrivation.

Kerry..we are going on the same cruise as you are. I have never gone on RCI so it will be interesting. A passport is the way to go.

Err on the side of caution and get the passport, you will need it soon enough anyway. Technically you don't need it YET to sail, but if you run into a problem on an island and you miss the boat or you need to get home you will have trouble getting out of that country

There are two compelling reasons to get a passport even if it's not strictly required.

>> 1. Passports expedite clearance of immigration because the agents have computers that scan the OCR type on passports. With alternative documentation, they have to type the information into their computers manually.

>> 2. If you need to fly home from a foreign country due to an emergency at home, you will need a passport to do so. U. S. consulates can issue temporary passports valid for one (1) reentry, but the need to go to the nearest consulate -- which, in the Caribbean, may be on a different island or even in a different country -- to obtain them could delay your return by a day or two.

So getting passports for everybody in your party before your cruise will make your life a lot easier.

Norm.
