Default first time cruiser Sovereign of the seas July 21...

Hubby and I are going on our first cruise this July 21st. It is a 4 night from Port Canaveral to Nassau, Bahamas. Anyone else have plans for same cruise? Also, to all experienced cruisers: I chose a 4 day cruise as a first cruise due to concerns about seasickness. I seem to be prone and am a bit worried. Is there a seasickness med that does not make you drowsy? Most non-drowsy meds still make me sleepy. I know, I am pathetic. [/b]

There is a non-drowsy form of Dramamine, which my wife uses on our cruises and it works great. Just remember, dramamine should be taken atleast 1 - 2 hours BEFORE you leave port, it is a preventative medication and won't help much if you wait until you start to experience symptoms before you take it.

I use Bonine. (It's right next to the Dramamine).

Only you have to take it 24 hours before you cruise, so it gets into your system. (I found that out the hard way!) It won't work once you are seasick.

Used it on every cruise since. It works fine and didn't make me drowsy either.

ps: you'll see lots of people with patches or wrist bands too.

thanks to all that have replied. I have heard of Bonine too. I think I will try a couple of things before the cruise to see which one makes me less drowsy. It is no fun trying to have fun when all you want to do is sleep! We are really looking forward to our first cruise. My hubby and I went to Sandals in Jamaica a year ago and had an amazing time. We loved the all inclusive part of it. We figured a cruise would be a similar experience and since we are not big drinkers, having to pay extra for alcohol should not be too painful. We can't wait to set sail! K

My daughter once used some wrist bands that we bought at Walgreens. I think it's a pressure principle....they worked for her.
Have a great time. The Sovereign is a great ship.

Great ship! Been aboard 5 times. Personally, I would not take any meds. You probably won't need them and they will interfere with your alcohol consumption. Don't assume you will get sea sick. You are just going to the Bahamas and will spend more time in port than cruising. The water this time of year will be calm. Have a sense of adventure. 8)

I am so glad to hear good things about Sovereign of the Sea from some experienced cruisers ! We are getting so excited about our upcoming trip! I also appreciate someone suggesting that I may not get seasick. This has got me so worried. I would hate to go on vacation only to be sick the entire time. I have decided to have a positive attitude but bring medication as a precaution. I would certainly hate to disrupt my ability to enjoy a couple of drinks each night! K

You are going to love the Sovereign. It's the oldest ship in the fleet and she will leave us soon but overall very well maintained, dedicated staff and great service.

You made a good pick for your first cruise. I just took the Sovereign in April. My family was coming over from Europe and I took them on their first trip. They LOVED IT!

I can't help you with the sea sickness part since I do not get sea sick. Don't be over anxious though. A lot of times people cause sea sickness mentally by saying "Oh my, here we go" at the first sign of motion.

Have fun and welcome to the world of cruising and Royal Caribbean. Sea sickness will be the least of your problems afterwards. You will be trying to find ways of booking more cruises. The addiction is upon you.

Just got off the Sovereign on May 16th. We needed meclazine the first day. The captain had announced that we were dealing with a storm and that the seas may be a bit rough. THEY WERE. We went to guest services and got the meclazine from them. It did not cause drowsiness and we still had a few beers too. Coming back on our sea day was a bit rough also but again the meclazine helped.

(you can see my quick review under the topic "stay away from the Sovereign of the Seas" that I posted)

Have fun on your first cruise. I grew up in south jersey, so I love the water. now i'm landlocked in ohio, so I cruise every two years to get back in the swing of things. My wife has used the patch, dramimine, bonine, she has used them all. She liked the patch the best. You put it on prior to the cruise and it lasts the entire cruise.

Cheers
