Dot, you can visit 30 Rockefeller Center, home of NBC Studios and take the tour there. You can also take one of those triple decker tour buses around Manhatten for a tour. If you visit the Times Square/Grand Central Station area, you can board the bus there. Katz's deli is great but always very busy. Bob from CT
You can check out http://www.newyorkpass.com/ for ideas. The pass itself is only good if you are going to do many things in a day, but the site has a good list of things to do. We loved our sunset harbor cruise. And there is always an awesome day to be had in Central Park with no admission fee.
Katz' deli is a landmark, not much to look at but the food is excellent, no meat slicers at Katz's the meat is so tender they hand carve everything!
Not always true... I too was a lifelong New Yorker until 5 years ago.
During a visit to New York by a woman who would (and has) become my wife, we went to Katz's deli after hours for what we expected would be world class corned beef and pastrami. Instead what we got was rubber. We probably should have complained.. but we're not from the complainers...
so we just finished what we could and left.
I thought about this for a while and I am convinced that if we offered a tip in advance to the sandwich maker... we would have gotten first quality meat.
We will never go back to Katz's. Carnegie deli.... now your talking deli baby!!

Funny, I lived near Katz for years & never went there. The pictures look great though (www.katzdeli.com).
I love the view from the top of the Empire State Building. I personally wouldn't spend too much time in Central Park because it is too big to see it all. Just go to 59th st and stroll along its south edge, see the Trump Tower(s), the handsome cabs and the former Plaza hotel.
Statue of Liberty is accessed from downtown (Battery Park), and you can also see the Wall Street area & ground zero while down there. I don't know what there is to see of ground zero anymore, though. A trip to Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island is most of a day, but well worth it.
Times Square is fun to see but doesn't take long. Don't shop or eat there, too touristy. Rockefeller Center is nearby.
It really helps to try the subway. It is often the fastest way to get around.
If you want to see the "weird" people (musicians with mohawks, tattoed & pierced people) go to St Marks Place at 8th St & 3rd Avenue (East Village). This was the "Haight Ashbury" of NYC, and is still a very arty district. The 2nd Ave Deli (at 10th St) is also a famous deli.
Almost all of the places can be reached on the NR Subway line that generally follows Broadway.
I think we're going to skip Ground Zero and the "strange" people. We are from OK and have our own Ground Zero if you will in OKC, worked the bombing, know people that died that day etc and don't need anymore of that. The people, we'll skip that since we have the kids, nuf said
