Default Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island and Katz Deli in NY

We will be in Jersey awaiting our cruise departure and have 2 days prior to play around in NY.

One day we plan on spending a 1/2 day touring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We've read many places about tickets. Then other places say it's all free. What gives?

Also has anyone eaten at Katz Deli? We are HUGE pastrami fans and this looks like the perfect place to get a "fix" if you will. Can anyone tell me about it ie the best time to eat there etc?

What else can we do in NY with my mom who is 81 and somewhat wheelchair bound for tours and two kids ages 9 and 6.

We will have a couple of days to kill in NYC also. Our only for sure tour so far is to visit "ground zero".
Have fun...

We won't be doing Ground Zero since we have the kids.

9/11 also happens to be Ds birthday (he'll be 10 this year) and we don't dwell on the things that happened that day, instead we celebrate ALL life.

Enjoy your time in NY.

Anyone else have ideas?

Dot, you can visit 30 Rockefeller Center, home of NBC Studios and take the tour there. You can also take one of those triple decker tour buses around Manhatten for a tour. If you visit the Times Square/Grand Central Station area, you can board the bus there. Katz's deli is great but always very busy. Bob from CT

Thanks Bob!

We have actually considered the bus, I think it would thrill the kids (we're from Small Town OK!) and Grand Central since Ds is an avid train lover and has been since he was 1!!!

We'll just stand in line at Katz I guess, must REALLY be worth the wait!

You can check out http://www.newyorkpass.com/ for ideas. The pass itself is only good if you are going to do many things in a day, but the site has a good list of things to do. We loved our sunset harbor cruise. And there is always an awesome day to be had in Central Park with no admission fee.

As a Life long New Yorker

Katz' deli is a landmark, not much to look at but the food is excellent, no meat slicers at Katz's the meat is so tender they hand carve everything!

I would recommend you go to the Top of the Rock Observatory at Rockerfeller Center it has stunning 360 degree views of NY.

and if it should rain (heaven forbid) the kids would love the Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planitarium.

Not always true... I too was a lifelong New Yorker until 5 years ago.
During a visit to New York by a woman who would (and has) become my wife, we went to Katz's deli after hours for what we expected would be world class corned beef and pastrami. Instead what we got was rubber. We probably should have complained.. but we're not from the complainers...
so we just finished what we could and left.
I thought about this for a while and I am convinced that if we offered a tip in advance to the sandwich maker... we would have gotten first quality meat.

We will never go back to Katz's. Carnegie deli.... now your talking deli baby!!

Funny, I lived near Katz for years & never went there. The pictures look great though (www.katzdeli.com).

I love the view from the top of the Empire State Building. I personally wouldn't spend too much time in Central Park because it is too big to see it all. Just go to 59th st and stroll along its south edge, see the Trump Tower(s), the handsome cabs and the former Plaza hotel.

Statue of Liberty is accessed from downtown (Battery Park), and you can also see the Wall Street area & ground zero while down there. I don't know what there is to see of ground zero anymore, though. A trip to Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island is most of a day, but well worth it.

Times Square is fun to see but doesn't take long. Don't shop or eat there, too touristy. Rockefeller Center is nearby.

It really helps to try the subway. It is often the fastest way to get around.

If you want to see the "weird" people (musicians with mohawks, tattoed & pierced people) go to St Marks Place at 8th St & 3rd Avenue (East Village). This was the "Haight Ashbury" of NYC, and is still a very arty district. The 2nd Ave Deli (at 10th St) is also a famous deli.

Almost all of the places can be reached on the NR Subway line that generally follows Broadway.

Paul, thank you SO much for everything. WOW!

I think we're going to skip Ground Zero and the "strange" people. We are from OK and have our own Ground Zero if you will in OKC, worked the bombing, know people that died that day etc and don't need anymore of that. The people, we'll skip that since we have the kids, nuf said

Again, THANKS!
