I have booked a shore trip in Belize to see the Mayan Ruins and Belize Zoo. This is a private tour for my family of 4 and was not booked with Royal Caribbean. Does anyone have any suggestions for what a reasonable tip would be to give our tour guide? Considering the cost of this excursion, 20% just seems a little high for the tip. The company I booked this with won't give me any idea other than saying its at my discretion taking into consideration the service. The excursion time is listed as 5 hours. I'm just trying to plan for all miscellaneous costs for our first cruise and I certainly don't want to be insulting by undertipping. I just want to be sure that I fairly budgeted for these type of expenses.
Good grief, you're thinking about a BIG tip for a trip you haven't taken yet.
Take a few different things into consideration before tipping and how much. Is the driver/guide the owner? Did you have a good time or just feel like they were just doing another job? What's the country like economically? Is it really poor ? Would you be tipping a weeks wages for them?
A tip is a special thank you for a job that is done with extra attention to you. I think it is a gut feeling-you should feel happy to tip someone-they made you feel special and you reciprocate with $$. It is a kind gesture it shouldn't be the kind of thing to worry about. Go with the flow on your excursion, when you are headed back THEN work it out in your head and hand whatever you feel is comfortable for you to your guide and look them in the eye and say "thank you-this is for you, we had a great time". It should be a pleasure doing so, not something sneaky or underhanded feeling. Have a great excursion.
I snore and like a cool cabin. I'm a happy person.
