There was nothing in the Royal Caribbean press release about cutting out lobster, charging for dining room and buffet food. To start those kinds of rumors is really irresponsible. The cruise lines are NOT the airlines, we know that for a fact. An airline seat is a commodity, the economy of the airlines is completely different to that of the cruise lines. Cruise lines are very customer driven and wouldn't upset the cruising public by charging for all dining. Royal Caribbean released a 4 point plan to cut costs, once again, nothing in that plan even remotely proposes these types of actions. Cruise lines don't want to upset their customers by doing anything like this, while the airlines don't seem to care how many of their customers they upset.

People accept to pay for food and checking in bags when they shall fly and because of that the airlines charge for it.

If the cruiselines try to do the same thing and the passengers accept it they will do it but hopefully the cruisepassengers won´t accept it!

From Sweden we can "cruise" to Finland for just a few dollar (it can be less than $100 for a two night "cruise" to Helsinki) but nothing is included. Some people thinks that´s cruising but I don´t because I know what real cruising is!

I wondered where that thing about cutting out lobster came from. I have no idea.

Peoplesuggest it is farfetched to cut out the main dining rooms, buffet and production shows on ships, but as far as I know that is exactky what NCL plans tro do on their new F3 ships coming in 2010. I am not sure about the buffets, but they are cutting out the main dining rooms and main theater.

This is NOT the same as saying they will charge for all meals - I know that is not true, however, they will have more dining options for a fee and also ENTERTAINMENT options FOR A FEE on these ships. It isn't entirely impossible to think cruising could change that much.

Still, Royal Caribbeans strategy will be to command higher fares for Oasis to cover the fuel costs - they won't make it up in food. The only way I see them drastically changing itineraries is if they can't get those higher fares (but I am sure they will, unless the economy just poops out).

They still have other ships to worry about, though. One ironic thing of introducing beautiful new ships is it makes their other ships dated - possibly before their time.

The Voyager class ships are still years ahead (design-wise) of anything other cruise lines are doing, but by Oasis standards they are going to seem ordinary. That will affect pricing on Voyager-class ships.

They are obsolescing their own product as much as the competitions'.

I'm afraid the nickel & diming currently in vogue will evolve to diming & quartering (of even half dollar and dollar coining). I can see a cover charge for some of the shows. I can see them putting less food out for the buffet and just not replenishing it towards the end of peak periods. I can also see smaller portions and a new policy of "no second helpings".

This is, of course, all completely speculative but they need to cut some things just to stay on an even keel in relation to fuel charges. Almost all lines now charge a fuel surcharge and that may increase again

The cruise lines (not just Royal Caribbean) need to remain profitable but must walk a fine tightrope between cost cutting and customer cutting. Certain things are expected on a cruise. Many cruise in large part because it is nearly "all Inclusive". If cruise line cut out too many traditionally included features, suddenly land based vacations start to look a whole lot better.

Personally, I’d rather pay a higher per cabin fee and not worry about the nickels, dimes and portion control. At least we know our budget in advance. At the rate we cruise, a $200 difference over a week is not difficult to overcome if you only do it every 3 or 4 years. Our next cruise is not until next spring. I hope the experience does not disappoint in comparison to the cruise we just took in 2006. I’m still optimistic that we will have a wonderful time and still be thinking about it in 2011 when we plan to take a cruise with our daughter for her graduation.

I think DTW is on to something....

Why not charge to use the pool? Or to participate in pool-side activities? Why not charge to see the show in the main theatre? Why not a cover charge for bingo? Or trivia?

If you're going to nickle and dime, why not go all the way...........?

Why not tender in each port and let us pay for the tendertickets?

I don´t like if NCL will make us pay for more things on the F3 but as long as they don´t have a sink in the same room as the toilet I won´t cruise with those ships anyway!

Default Cost savings

I would think that more stops closer together would save more money then adding sea days where the enginges are using fuel at a higher rate.
As I really enjoy the longer cruises, I think adding a day to T/A's and roundtrips to Hawaii and going slower would save on fuel.

As far as food, the ship wastes a a huge amount of food in the buffets where they don't know how many people are going to eat there. Close the main dining room for breakfast or lunch and have everyone eat in the buffet, or close the buffet for one of the meals and have everyone dine in the main dineing room. Lobsters- serve two tails with the dinner and do not allow diners to order additional lobster meals, they can order anything else on the menu but are limited to just the two lobster tails. Thus saving money and preserving one of the great perks of cruising.

That actually sounds reasonable. I think if they use their heads, they can make alot of small changes like that which really aren't going to sting anybody too much and could add up to huge savings for them if done fleet wide. Many shorter cruises, at least on some lines, are still around 300 bucks (before all the add ons of fuel, air fare tax etc). With the price of everything going up, is it really reasonable to think they can provide large production shows, a night to gorge on unlimited lobster and numerous other all inclusive features without something having to give pretty soon? I'm not a big lobster guy and it wasn't even offered last fall on our 4 day Sovereign cruise so I guess I thought it had already been taken away anyway...Maybe it's only on 5 day or longer cruises??

I'll probably get some heat for this, but they could probably save alot by just cutting off ALL food between, for example, 3 am to 6 am. I suppose room service is nice but I'm not sure it should be a total freebie except maybe for those in suites or other premium accomodations. I'm also not sure, for example, that pizza needs to be available at 4:30 am...Those are just small examples of other adjustments I think they could make that isn't going to ruin anyones vacation. I know most of us will waste away if we have to stop eating for a few hours during the early morning hours but hopefully, we'll survive lol.

One last small cost cutter for RCI...Lay off that stupid pirate!!

That is funny about the Pirate. He can be annoying at dinner when you are trying to eat and they want to take a picture with him. Just some of the fun about cruising so I never get upset when he comes around. I like the late night pizza after drinking all night. By 4:00 A.M. I usually have the munchies! Bob

Default Pirate

The Pirate works for the contract photagraher not the cruise line, no savings. As far as the afterhours food, I think the kids are the biggest eaters of the pizza after their club is closed. When my son was younger I couls always go up there at two or three and find 20 or 30 teens eating pizza and burgers and talking. I always knew where they were and I can't think of one time where there was a complaint about their behavior.

..Yeah, I could tolerate him until the dining room, but that's kind of where I drew the line. It's just so cheesy in the dining room envirnonment and a terrible make-up job to boot...But like you say, it's just one of those little things.

The lobster cutting came from me, it was a discussion I had with the head waiter on my Liberty of the Seas cruise on 3/1/08 and confirmed on my Voyager of the Seas cruise on 9/26/08. Unless two different ships and two completely different set of people have miss-information; we can hope for the best. Decisions of course change as they are re-evaluated by Corporate; however, at the point of time of these two voyages, this was the information presented to me.

Moreover, I doubt Royal Caribbean would ever issue a press-release specific to menu changes in the dinning room.
