Default Explorer of the sea-First time cruise or Norweegian Gem

Hi everyone,
This will be a first time cruise for our family and a first family vacation. I have 2 boys 17 and 8. Is this ship best for kids? How much is the tipping on the Explorer? Thinking of The carribean cruise for march 27,2009 9 nights. I have read about this ship and also the Norwegian Gem to the Bahamas so I want the one that is more teen/kid friendly. Any info I'd appreciate.

This is a link to our article about tipping..that will give you all the info you need...

I have sailed the Freedom and The Gem....with the ages of your kids, and the varied offerrings on the Navigator, I would suggest that ship..I loved the Gem, but would say go RCI...

They have the Promenade parade, skating, golf, the rock wall, and the kids program too, means happy kids.....

If you are deciding between RCI or NCL I would go with RCI.

Thank you all for responding I believe that I will go with the explorer. It's funny but all of a sudden now I keep seeing commercials about royal carribean cruises . I still wish I could find out how much exacty the gratuity is so I can put that into our budget.

This is from the Royal website to give you a better idea of the gratuity.
As for kids I would base it the same as adults unless they are very young.

Stateroom attendant: $3.50 USD a day per guest
Dining Room Waiter: $3.50 USD a day per guest
Assistant Waiter: $2.00 USD a day per guest
Headwaiter: $.75 USD a day per guest

From my experience, and from what others have said over the years..unless the head waiter is exceptional, he does not get tipped....

Figure the tips to be $10.00 per day, per person, that pretty much covers everything, unless you order room service, thats a few dollars to the person who deliveres it.

absolutely. the ONLY time i saw my HeadWaiter on the Brilliance was the last night when he played buddybuddy with every table wanting a tip. i didn't tip him.

i always tip everyone else. Royal sets it up so you can adjust your tip depending on your service if you want, which i like.
