i've read in a few places of people who are sailing on Adventure and dont have flights that arrive in SJU until 5 or 530pm. (dont worry, not me, we are flying down two days early) now, knowing that the ship doesnt offically departs until 8:30, doesn't everybody HAVE do the muster drill before first seating when it is still light out? sooo....wouldn't everybody have to be abroard by then b/c everbody must do the muster?

I believe everyone has to be onboard 2 hours before sail away...Figure the muster drill is around 10:00, usually as you are pulling away from the pier or shortly before.. You do see a lot of passengers arriving that late, not me either, but have flown in the day of the cruise, its fairly easy and safe, most cruises depart at 10PM anyway, so plenty of time.

The muster drill was conducted at 6pm, and I'm sure everyone was onboard when I sailed on the Adventure 2 1/2 months ago. I don't know if they would've let anyone on if they showed up after the muster drill.

that's what i was thinking. i thought it was mandated that everyone muster! and seeing that we leave at 830, you would think that most people would want to be there early or a day in advance to actually enjoy your "first" day on the ship

Muster drills aren't required prior to sailing. According to the US Coast Guard, for sailings of one week or less, muster drill must be held within 24 hours of sailing.
Don't forget that not everyone needs to show for the muster drill; there are exemptions.

that may be true by coast guard standards, but for RCI's sake, isn't it mandatory that everyone muster?
I would bet that even RCI has medical exemptions.

Other than medical exceptions, yes, they require that everyone go..
Once we were boarding a Princess cruise as they were starting the drill, the cabin attandant told us to just stay put, it was already in progress as we entered the ship.
