Default Oh well....

I understand that increasing revenue or cutting costs is usually required when facing tough times. Even at $4.95 I will go there with my family....it's still not a bad deal.

When given a choice of free food or food I have to pay for, the choice is easy.

It is like if they said you can go here and get free beer or you can go there and pay $4.95 for a beer. What would one do?

They do!? Cool! I didn't know that since this will only be my second cruise with RCL. Well...that is what I will do then.

As for the beer question Dave.....uh.....I don't get the question.

I had Johnny Rockets coupons on Mariner last year and don't remember if I used them. I think I let the kids have them.

Exactly, I don't get why you would pay for food when you can get it for free.

Pay for food or food for free
Full of taxes, but call it a fee
If we want a Johnny's shake
$4.95 we will simply forsake
If we splurge I'll hardly care
Money here or money there
For us it's all a total sum game
One place or other they'll get the same!

Nickel and dime to death. I love Royal, but they know every angle imaginable to turn $. Think of the water they sell as you leave the ship for $4.00 or so that probably cost them .35/unit.!

Pretty soon they will close down the concierges......... I sure as hell hope not because that is a hell of a perk for diamonds!

I'll bet that is where DTW is from 5-8:00 every night while cruising!

I don't see the problem with the $4.95 charge. Once again. I'm not thinking about how the cruiseline is "trying" to nickle and dime me.

WHENEVER.. with a loud and boisterous WHENEVER! I cruise, I feel like I'm getting over on the cruiselines. I'm not sure where else I can go with my lady for 7 days and nights and have all my room, board, meals, and exotic locations taken care of for under 2 large! and sometimes if I bargain hunt enough, for under 12 hundred.

Let's do the math,

2000 divided by 7 divided by 2 = $142.85 per night, per person
1200 divided by 7 divided by 2 = $85.71 per night, per person

BTW.. I've included airfare in the totals.

I can't complain.. Look at the numbers from my recently booked cruise in March.

680 divided by 4 divided by 2 = $85 per night, per person.

Still can't complain..

I agree what's the big deal if you don't like the $4.95 charge go eat at the windjammer nobody said you had to eat at johnny rockets anyway. Personally have only eaten there once and used the C & A coupons when we did that. I go on cruises to enjoy myself and relax (and go to the beaches) so I don't complain about anything, even a so called bad day cruising is better than a great day at work. Some people just always have to try and find the negative even when on a big beautiful ship in the Caribbean. Not me. Will still eat at Johnny's don't care about the prices just remember it is an optional place to eat and there is always plenty of other options.

Regarding the question Free food or $4.95 food...
Free beer or pay beer... the answer from this corner is...

Whichever has what I'm seeking.
If what we want is at Johnny Rockets and not at Windjammer
then the price is inconsequential (to a degree).
Same goes for the beer... or wine!
On Freedom of the Seas, Suzanne found a Chilean Shiraz that she simply loved at almost $10 a glass.... 2 glasses per night at the wine bar....
Hey, you only go around once and no matter what anyone says, you can't take it with you!

Funny how you NEVER hear the complaints about the cost of alcohol but food.... oh noooooo.. let's sink the ship, food / food service costs too much.. and the latest complaints about the cost of food or services are completely optional.

Good point EMG. You have the option of enough food on board. Nobody is forcing you to go to Johnny Rockets.

JMHO - The hamburgers are MUCH better from the Lido Grill than they are at JR and from what I remember the $ fee only covers food, not sodas, beer or milkshakes. You have to purchase those. We only eat there when we have a C&A coupon. We also have a JR close by in the mall but again we only eat there using our Entertainment Coupon. The food is okay only.

Well I'll be devils advocate here.

What if they start hitting folks for a personal service charge in the regular sit down dining room. Maybe they will justify it the same way the pizza delivery guys justify a delivery charge...people arent tipping when they should or so they say.

Are people then going to chime in and say "well no one is forcing you to eat there you can always go to the windjammer to fill your tummy or order room service". I see the same chain of logic being presented here.

And as far as the price of drinks I'll stand up and say they are a little on the high side considering they obviously get it at a better price then your corner bar, although I think its to control the intake of passengers more then it is to make a buck. Now confiscating liquor brought on board for personal consumption in you cabin and obligating people to belly up and pay their inflated bar prices is nickel and dimeing to me.

Personally I could care less about Johnny Rockets. Im with DTW on this one.

Dave you better put that speedo back on in your pic its supposed to get down to like 24 tonight in St Pete isnt it?

At least if I spend 4.95 at johnny rockets I am guarenteed to get a good meal. What guarentee can u give me if I drop 5 bucks in the slot machine?

So true EMG. Even with added fees your still getting over on the cruiseline. All-inclusives can't match these rates. Maybe everyone would like to see all this included and have the fares go up. Not me. I'd rather pay for add-ons at my discretion. The buffet is still included. With cruiselines lowering fares to attract customers, they must make it up somewhere. It would be awsome if they were NPOs. If they don't keep up their profit margins, stockholders will pull out. It's just business and is always about the bottom line.

When I'm on a cruise - I let loose. I don't mind the fee for Johnny's.
When I get home - it's another story. I'm much more cautious with my money.

However, If the economy doesn't bounce back soon, less and less people will have the money to cruise. Those little fee's will disappear fast.

By the way, their cherry cokes are the BEST.

I couldn't disagree more. I believe that if the economy worsens you will see continually dropping fares and more add-on fees.

My husband and I were surprised by the fee on our first cruise together but soon got used to it after 8 cruises. After sailing Norwegian this Jan, we both commented the JR fee on RCI was no big deal after paying a $15-$25 per person cover and then also another fee for select items on the specialty dining menu on NCL. We didn't expect to constantly be paying additional fees. Now that felt like nickeling and dimeing!

Once again, I'm loyal to Royal!

That could be. But I guess it my cruise price drops I won't mind paying the fee!
In all seriousness - yes all these add-on's are a pain. They should be included in the price. But since they're not - I usually go for it.

Since Royal just refunded my wife and I the fuel supplement fee, I have enough money to go to Johnny Rockets, get a massage, and an expresso. I'm a happy cruiser
