Default Montego Bay excursions?

We will be sailing onboard Freedom of the Seas on May 4th, 2009. I've seen a lot of posts regarding safety in Jamaica. Can anyone give us some suggestions for excursions leaving from Montego Bay. We will be sailing with our 22 and 19 yr. old sons. This is our first cruise and first visit to the Caribbean. Thanks!

You really want to book some kind of excursion at this port, nothing by the port and totally fenced in. Look into either the river rafting or the canopy tour, bet your kids would love that. We did the canopy tour and it was great!

We did an island tour, which was less than stellar, and we stayed onboard the bus, for 2 of the stops...In Margarittaville, on out way into the restaurant, which was quite dirty, we passed a drug deal...

If you do any of the water excursions, I feel you will have a much better time on this island.

Default Also looking...

I am taking my 5 year-old son on his fiorst cruise and Montego Bay is the third stop. I was thinking of doing the "Discover the real Jamaica" tour since we are doing beach / swimming in Cozumel and Cayman. I have head stories about this port and I dont want to be afraid for my son and I want him to have a good time. Any suggestions?

Hi, Jason, welcome to CruiseMates! (Also, I'm a native Houstonian, and live in Alvin now!)

In Jamaica, on our last few visits, we have gone to Sunset Beach Resort.

http://www.sunsetbeachresort.com/

Is is all inclusive and located very near the pier. It is very safe and you don't encounter any of the problems associated with Jamaica. Just grab a taxi when you get off the ship. I can't remember the exact fare, but it wasn't much.

Have fun!

maybe look into Dunns River Falls. I did that when I went on my Freedom cruise last June. It was a lot of fun but if you don't have really good balance than don't do it.

In Montego Bay we used the shuttle bus to go to Doctor's Cove Beach (which has its own security) and Margaritaville with its water slide into the ocean. We had a great time but be aware of the personal safety issues.

what about the jeep tour? It sounds just like one I took in St Lucia, which was awesome.

I totally agree with subtropic- go to Doctors Cove Beach - it is really nice, clean, there is a restaurant/bar on the beach, and Marqueritaville is basically next door.

Are there two Margartittavilles in Mobe, because if there is only one, that one is filthy, and Jimmy should be ashamed...

we did the canapy tour and it was great. Very exciting. The personell was very serious when it came to our being safe. They double checked all lines and made sure we knew what we were doing and also made it fun at the same time. The ride there was fun also. This is a very safe excurson for your family.

Definately do the canopy tour! I did it last year with my two teenagers and it was awesome. Smaller kids will love it too. Very safe and entertaining. The BBQ and beer afterwards were teriffic. Doctor's Cove is very nice if you just want to hang on the beach. We also saw a lot of people going down the river on rafts so you may want to check into that. Jamaica people are soooo friendly. We hired a driver for the day and he took us all around the island stopping at various road side places and everyone was great. The food was so-so. We went to Negril and jumped at the cliffs at Rick's Cafe.
