Default Internet Charges on Explorer

When we were on Explorer in February, the charge was 55 cents per minute. You can also buy a package at a reduced cost.

If you don't have to have internet access every day, you might want to consider going to an internet cafe in port, where you can get access far cheaper.

What about wi-fi in your cabin on your own laptop?

You are connecting to the ships network so you will pay to get on no matter what.

I would never expect free wi-fi on a cruise ship. Is there a pay one fee, unlimited package or do you buy minutes? Either way just curious about the rates.
I have heard that the service is slow so it looks like I could forget about using a web cam. Would I be safe in saying this?

Depending on how much you want to be online, here are the rates:

The cost is $.55 per minute or you can choose a prepaid package:
$28.00 for 60 minutes
$38.00 for 90 minutes
$55.00 for 150 minutes

Yes the networks are slow. Many people compose their mail ahead of time, connect then just paste and send. Think of it as an old slow dial up line. You will be spending more time waiting for response then anything else.

I am also going on the April 17th Explorer cruise and am on the fence about bringing my laptop. I want to stay conneected, but I am afraid I will start checking my office e-mail. I know my cell phone will work in Puerto Rico. Last cruise I sat on the balcony and called home. Rather then pay the hefty fees for cell calls, I plan to use international phone cards to call home on the other islands. I do have international service on my cell, but there is still higher fees.

Just concerned about becoming electronically disconnected during the "at sea" days. Then again, we are on vacation!

I have to put my pooch in the kennel and will check in with them by phone when I can. Can I use a cell phone from the ship?

I've read you can use your cell, BUT it sounds like it's gonna cost an arm or leg.

I don't want any of our kids coming with us to even turn the phone on.

I dont want the text messages to come over.

Are those rates for internet lab or wifi from your laptop? Or the same either way?

Dave,

When last I cruised on the Explorer this past June, those were the rates regardless of whether it be wireless laptop or their computer facilities. I hope things haven't changed this June when we return.

I find that's the best place to use my laptop is early morning around 6:00 -6:30ish at the Promenade Cafe. At that time the connection will be near its fastest (no one's up to be on the internet ) and I can sit there and enjoy my coffee. There are also other places, one being the Crown and Kettle where I found on port days when most were off the ship the speeds were pretty good. The only problem is I found my typing was getting awfully lousy around the fourth mug of ale.
