The cruiselines just can't please everyone as we all do have different taste and not just in food.

Royal is my line however if there was something that I did not care for (food, service, entertainment etc etc) I would look around and jump ship. I work too hard when I get onboard a ship I am looking for the Perfect cruise and so far I get that with Royal. If something was not to my liking on Royal I would jump ship. It's a big ocean with alot of ships out there.

When it comes to food no Cruiseline will satisfy every single one of it's cruisers even the more upscale line. Someone is bound to dislike something.
I hear all the time.....
Royal food is good Royal food is bad
Carnival food is good Carnival food is bad
Princess food is good Princess food is bad
Etc etc etc.

All this talk about food I think I'll go make me some popcorn!
Well put! I have cruised one time on Carnival and I had a wonderful time. My husband and I go on a cruise to relax and have a good time. We don't go just for the food, but it's nice to walk out of the dinning room feeling satisfied! We heard that Royal was the ship to be on, so we now have a sailing date of 1-18-10 on Monarch OTS....looking forward to some nice relaxing quality time with my hubby!! This cruise will determine who I sail with in the future.

I wish Royal would add on the menu Calorie and Fat counts to each selection.

That Salmon was soooo good but the sauce on it must have had a ton of Calories.....

You know asking about the "how good is the food?" is a question that can be answered many ways.

1.) If you're the kind of person who "Eats to Live" you're looking for healthy food. Whole grains, low-fat, low-calorie, low-carb, high-fiber, high in anti-oxidants and etcetera. People in this category have commented that the food doesn't make the cruise or please put the fat content and calories on the menu. If you're health-food eater you're looking for a cruise to cater to your tastes and offer plenty of healthy foods both on the menu and in the buffet and that's what constitutes "Good Food" to you. Unfortunately, most Americans don't eat this way. This is why most cruise lines offer only 1 healthy choice option on the Main Dinning Room menu. It's not to say that most Americans won't eat some healthy foods, but most don't want the entire meal to be, just healthy food.

2.) If you're the kind of person who "wants a deal in food" you're looking for quantity and selection of food. I have friends that when prime rib is on the menu and they order it they're upset if the slice of prime rib isn't 2-inches thick. The quality of the food isn't as important as the quantity and they want to feel they're getting their monies worth of food. I've seen posts were folks eat many more than 3 times a day and folks who've tried to eat their weight in food on a cruise (Gross!). Buffets are were these folks judge what's "Good Food" and what's not. Although there's plenty that go to the MDR and order 2,3 and 4 entrees and want service like they are the only ones in the dinning room. Read "Cruise Confidential" regarding how this behavior impacts the staff and other people in the dinning room.

3.) Then there are those who "Live to Eat" who look at food as an important part of their everyday lives. These are folks who value the quality of the food above all else. As an example, look at the difference in taste between a "middle of winter, hard as a rock, store bought" tomato versus a "home-grown, heirloom" tomato. There's a world of difference between these two pieces of food. Of course presentation and sufficient quantity are important to these folks. Long ago, when cruising was priced and aimed above the middle market, cruise lines used to buy some of the best quality food available to them. No longer, the shift to middle-market consumers and price competition between lines plus the added effect of the bean counters has made the quality of food a "race to the bottom". It doesn't mean that aren't good things to eat. Rather, the number of things that are of good to great quality are hard to find.

I apologize if I sound like I'm attacking a particular group, that's not my intention other than "eating your own weight (still gross)". I'm just trying to point out that when someone asks about "Good Food?" it really depends upon how you see food.

KzVegas, that is a very very wise statement you made up there.
I believe that there are also people who will seek a combination of those culinary attributes in all sorts of percentage ratios!!!!

We went to Alaska in June. Food was not bad. I liked trying new things, my DH stuck to the steak. I don't think we had anything that was not good.

CQ , I saw your pictures and you don't have any problem with having big hips. I am sure that you are very active evry day, not just on your cruises. Since you are not a dessert eater that cut down on your calories.

You will allways be slim.

Desserts are my favorite! I just have alot of willpower and don't order any while cruising.

I tell my waiter day one not to give me a dessert menu!

I agree with this statement. I just don't agree that RCL puts something like it on every menu. I also feel there should be more than one choice. However, I will also continue to say that, even if what is on the menu falls into this category, the quality is not there a great deal of the time.

I'm really tired of the excuses that are used for inferor food, both on a ship and in a hotel/restaurant. Turning out a quality product does not mean you have to pay more, it just means it has to be done properly.

We did a two week cruise on RCI in Jan 08 and HAL in Aug 08 .
The food the same on both and similar to the food on HAL thru
the Panama.
The only issue we found , was that some kinds of yogurt ran out very quickly
during each week.

POSTING FROM MONARCH OF THE SEAS IN NASSAU, BAHAMAS!

This thread had generated some concern from me before this cruise, which I am currently enjoying. After eating on it for a couple days, my response is;

ARE YOU CRAZY!?!?!?!

The food is terrific, BETTER than before. The Windjammer is so go, I almost ate there for dinner instead of the MDR. The Asian and Indian selection at the buffet are great. I'm not just full, I'm satisfied. My only complaint is the processed eggs at breakfast, but even they were delicious when made into a salmon onion omlet. Ok, enough, this is expensive and I'm getting hungry sitting here next to the MDR, I might go up to Windjammer for a nibble before my seating in about 2 hours. CYA!
