Default Cell phones and SMS on RCCL ships

So I understnad that RCCL ships how have satellite repeaters for GSM phone services, and that they do not charge for access. You just have to pay for international roaming from your provider, depending upon plan. But how about this. SMS messages NEVER have long distance or minutes, some are free, others charge per message, again this depends on your plan. So can we text away on board for free? This would be nice to know.

The only thing I can tell you - my friends did an Alaskan cruise this year and she was only able to text me from land. Most of what she tried to send on the ship did not get through.

On our cruise in June we called only when we were docked and in town. Our cell phone provider told us that our phone would pick up the closest antenna, so we needed to be sure to be away from the ship. Just an aside, some of the cell phones on the ship started displaying the wrong times and dates. One displayed the date as 1994. Talk with your provider, they can give you the info you need.

For what it's worth, the phones belonging to the members of my party also posted weird dates but the ones I saw confirmed service availability. I believe all of our party were with Verizon.

On our latest cruise on Explorer of the Seas, I used my phone one evening several hundred miles off the coast of South Carolina while sitting in the fourth row of the Palace Theater. I was on only long enough to leave a brief message on an answering machine. Turned out the charge was five dollars (albeit the connection was the same as if I were just across town).

Hope this helps.

Todd

Wow, $5? I think I'll leave it off.

My wife did not refrain from screaming, "WHAT IS THIS CHARGE!" on our cell phone bill.

Guess henceforth, mine is not only gonna' be off if we again cruise but it'll probably be required to be in my wife's purse!

I have Sprint and not been able to text on board. The phone does work but costs $2.49/min. email is cheaper.

My husband and I sailed carnival last year and our cell's screen displayed "cell at sea". I was to scared of what my bill would look like if I were to even try to use it so I didn't. However, have you ever seen that Corona commercial with the couple sitting on the beach and their pager starts going off and he skips it across the ocean?? That's what my husband said he'd do to my cell phone if I even attempted to use it on our cruise in January.
