Dinner is a great place to start !! Even the line at boarding .. People at the start of the cruise are very friendly.

You should always smile when you enter a room, it makes you seem like you're put together and in control of yourself. If you're meeting someone for the first time, you want to put a time constraint on your first conversation so that they don't think you're weird AND if you think they are weird you can duck out for instance you can approach any group (never from the back or the side, always from the front), and start a conversation with an time constraint and an opinion opener (but no convo about religion or politics) such as : Hi, I've only got a second but I was talking to my GF about the check-in process and she thought it went smoothly, what do you think?

Boom convo started!!!

People on cruises seem more open to meeting other people... it's one big social event... you got that in your corner!

We're also sailing in September on Freedom OTS. We also sailed her last November out of Miami and I'm can say this.
Freedom Of The Seas is a magnificent beautifully detailed vessel in every single way. Beautiful decor is everywhere ... like a feast for the eyes.
Food is great (especially Sorrento's !!) Service is lovely.
You're going to love your cruise!

The opening line, "is this your first cruise," is always a good ice breaker while you are waiting to board, or anywhere on the ship..works like a charm

experience cruisers LOVE to spot first time cruisers in line and will go out of their way to welcome you ..I suspect your excitement once you actually see your ship will be enough to start conversations..also monitor these boards and i'm sure you'll find some CM on your cruise so you can arrange to meet them either the night before or once you get onboard

be open to becoming involved in some of the games and events for the first dy or two..wear a teeshirt that features your favorite college/sports team

if all else fails, make an announcement that the first round of bon voyage drinks is on the captain

have a great cruise and thanks for posting

I was shy (no one laugh) then I started cutting hair for a living. I learned how to talk to people. I came up with opening lines. Some good opening lines are have you ever cruised before? If yes follow up with asking about where to and what ships? If they have been to the ports you are cruising to ask advice about the port. This will start you talking and pretty soon you will get comfortable. Most people are really nice and they like to feel like they are helping you.

Freedom of the Seas is a wonderful ship you will have a great cruise.

One thing about a cruise vacation is that mostly everyone is friendly and it is very easy to meet people to talk to.

Enjoy your cruise!!

Hey Kat you were once Shy

Fantastic ship.
Join a Trivia team. They have a couple of games daily.
Ask others about themselves, they will usually talk.....
Go and sit by the Flowrider, start chatting about the people on it... that makes it easy

The single most heard conversation starter.....

"Hi, where are you from?"

followed by...what do you do for a living?.....

depending on how they ask..i might tell them i am an exotic dancer (which will really start a conversation) 8) or i tell them i live off the kindness of rich widowers (which usually stops a conversation)

for those of us from New Orleans..when they ask where you are from and i tell them, it leads to some incredible conversations which i always add that they should come and see for theirselves to really understand the amount of work that still needs to be done

Ditto to everything already stated. Cruisers love to share their stories. It will be easy, and just be excited

Quick question for those of you who sailed Carnival and then jumped ship to RCCI. What are (if any) the big differences between the lines?

We have sailed 6 CCL cruises and have just booked our first RCCI on the Freedom of the Seas.

For us we are hoping the activities for our 14 and 16 year old will be more entertaining.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks and safe sailing

We have sailed the Carnival Victory it can't compare to a Freedom Class ship.
Many Teens love the Freedom Class ships. The evening flowrider party is a big hit with the teens.

I know I can't put my teens on any other ships because I would hear those horrible words....."I'm bored"

Enjoy the Freedom she is a beauty!

We have sailed both lines 3 RCCL and 3 with Carnival. While my kids are not in their teens yet I would look to booking a Freedom class ship if they were. As far as RCCL vs Carnival, that is debateable, my opinion is they are pretty much the same with RCCL winning out in ships (Voyager, Freedom, Oaisis classes) but Carnival wins in food and value.

We finally got a friend of ours to go on a cruise with us....we chose the Freedom. He was not at all excited to go on the cruise. He was OK the first night - not real excited - but not complaining. The next day he got on the FlowRider (he isn't a kid...he's in his 40's). After he lost his britches riding the FlowRider, he got off and asked when we were booking the next cruise!!

Needless to say, the rest of the cruise, he was greeted quite often by passengers making comments to him about losing his suit.

He LOVED it!!

Have a great time and enjoy yourself!!

Vegas, over the years here, I have found that even the most diehard "I don't want to cruise, cruisers" get converted....can I get an amen?

Yes...you get an "amen".

We have converted many "non-cruisers" to "cruisers".
This one just happened to be the funniest!
