Default transatlantic

thinking about taking transatlantic out of gavelston (may 1) to spain then going on to mediterranean (may 15). seeing that the ship arrives/departs barcelona on the same day. do we have to leave the ship? customs? how would you handle laundry after being on the ship for 14 days. we have cruised princess which has laundry facilities but think rc doesnt. also, we would be flying back from venice--one way trip---any suggestions on that situation.

Royal has laundry service; much like a hotel; you put your undergarments or shirts; dresses; etc in a bag and they will clean it. On longer cruises; such as ten or more days they normally have what they call discount laundry day. They provide like a paper bag and you are charged $10.00 for as much as you can stuff in the bag.

You will be able to leave the ship in Barcelona. There are tours for that day but they may end at the airport. It is a a 15 Euro cab ride from the airport to the pier. There may also be a tour available that brings you back to the ship.

What I would suggest is taking a cab to the port end of Las Ramblas (by the statue of Christopher Columbus) and just walking Las Ramblas or even getting on the Tourist Bus and take a ride around the city. You will see the Gothic District, Sacred Family Cathedral and other Gaudi buildings. You may not have a lot of time to explore but the Tourist bus will, at least, allow you to see the main sites.

In regard to laundry I strongly suggest that you bite the bullet and send it out when you are on board. Nothing would be worse, IMO, than doing laundry in Barcelona.

Yes: You will need to do a one way air from Venice to Galveston (or your home city). Check the cruise line air rates. This is one time that cruise air may be less than you can find it yourself.

Take care,
Mike

We were offered this service recently but it was $30 but we had a Diamond Coupon for $5. It was only for underwear, socks, & PJ's. We were able to get some t-shirts done, calling them sleep shirts.

do the $25 fill the bag laundry day. it's worth it. it's fun and easy to leave the ship and sightsee. barcelona is a great city. did the transatlantic this past spring on the adventure from puerto rico and it was fabulous. did two more back to back from barcelona once we arrived. my air was cheaper booking it online. can't wait to do it again in 2011.
