I have always heard not to book flights before noon. It has worked for me. In san Juan though to speed things up make sure you use a porter at the port getting off, they will bypass the taxi line and that line can get long. Also use a porter at the airport they too will bypass the check-in line for you and it will save you alot of time. Belive me it probably saved us at least two hours when we left Puerto Rico. Happy cruising.

We've been at the airport before 10 AM in San Juan but the last time was a couple of years ago. It all depends if you can get there early. If you want to try for that, you would have to walk off the ship with your own luggage hail a cab and go.

They used to have valet service at that airport but I don't know if they still do. We were going to use that but there was no one manning the kiosks when we got off the ship so we just cabbed it to the airport.

If you are later getting to the airport the linesup can be very long. Also, make sure you do not pack anything in your carry on that isn't allowed. Last time we were there I accidently had my $25 nail scissors. In the time it took me to walk over and get a supervisor to ask for an envelope to mail them to myself, they "walked" into the pocket of one of the checkers.

We haven't gone through San Juan since then.

Default Noon

We got of the ship with no problems but when we got to the airport there was a mob of people in what appeared to be an unending line I've never seen such a mess and it appeared to be related to the agriculture check. It delayed us by an hour. Usually things move smoothly but all it takes is encountering a delay so I always like to build in some time for something unexpected.

I agree with the previous posters, wait until about noon, although I've found that there are either morning flights or then flights later in the afternoon. Hopefully you can find one in that time frame.

This is why I suggest getting a porter at the airport. We did and he was able to put our bags through the agriculture screening and went to the front of the check-in line got our luggage tags and checked us in all in a matter of a few minutes. And the Delta check-in line was at least an hour or more at the time. Needless to say he got a very good tip.

Also something else to check in to, some of the airlines have check-in's at the port after you get off the ship, not sure if they offer that in San Juan, but its like a $10.00 charge and they would take your luggage for you...

Anyone recently cruise out of San Juan and know if they have this?

That's the valet service Donna. They had it the last 2 times we were in San Juan.

What I was talking about was the actual airlines there at the terminal, where you check in, get boarding passes, etc. and send your luggage off, may-be its the same thing you mentioned??

Yes I believe we are talking about the same thing. They call it Valet service. As you claim your luggage and go through customs they are straight ahead of you. I don't know how many airlines are involved now. Some of them cancelled out - I don't know why but all the bigger U.S. airlines were there.

We took the tour for later flights..They took us off the ship via a different way..no crowds..We toured the city, had lunch, and, then they took us to the airport.....

Good if you have to take a later flight.

The porter is the person who takes your luggage for you so you don't have to slep it youself. You give him a gratuity for doing so as there is no actually payment. They'll see you and come straight to you without asking (usually).

felix, thanks, I wasn't sure how to get one. I didn't realize that they would just come right up to you.

Porters are the BEST!! Well worth a $5.00 or more tip depending on your luggage. He pretty much bypasses all customs. Last year when we were on the Serenade, since we are Platinum, we had priority departure and we were off the ship and at the airport before 9:00. Had to wait until 2 for our flight.. Of course if I had booked an earlier flight we would have been late... Leaving on March 20 again from San Juan and we are thinking about booking a flight around 11'ish....
