Question Why can't RCCL have Beverage Packages?

Here is the changes made on Celebrity's Beverages packages and their pricing. So my question is why, can't the sister company RCCL not offer such plans on Royal ships??

Good Improvement on Beverage Packages

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below is a great improvement of the Classic Beverage Package I purchased last December on the Century. Back then it was quite restrictive and cost $50 per day. Now you can get soda's, beer, blended drinks etc., with the one package. Before there were different packages that were not inclusive of each other.

Want a carefree way to sail with Celebrity? Try our Premium & Classic Beverage Packages. Pay just one price to enjoy a wide variety of beverage choices such as premium coffees, bottled water, wine by the glass or your favorite cocktail. Once you have confirmed your purchase online, the order cannot be modified. You may, however, cancel the order and then make your purchase(s) again. This package must be pre-reserved a minimum of four days before your sail date. To purchase Beverage Packages on board, please visit any bar throughout the ship.

Classic Non-Alcoholic Package

In addition to enjoying your favorite Coca Cola can and fountain sodas selections such as Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta Orange and Coke Zero, you may also enjoy fresh squeezed and bottled juices, Premium Coffees and Teas and Non-Premium Bottled Water.

*Starting from: 13.00 USD Per Night

Premium Non-Alcoholic Package

Enjoy nearly our entire selection of Non-Alcoholic beverages on board including all canned and fountain soft drinks from Coca Cola, Premium Bottled Water from Evian, Perrier and San Pellegrino, Specialty Coffees and Teas, Non-Alcoholic Frozen Drinks and Smoothies, Red Bull Energy Drink and Specialty Waters from Vitamin Water.

*Starting from: 16.00 USD Per Night

Classic Package

Upgrade your cruise experience and pay one price to enjoy all of the benefits of our Classic Non-Alcoholic package as well as all Beers up to $5 per serving and spirits, cocktails and wines by the glass up to $8 per serving.

*Starting from: 39.00 USD Per Night

Premium Package

For the ultimate in value and convenience, our premium package provides all the benefits of our Premium Non-Alcoholic Package. In addition, you can enjoy our entire selection of Beers as well as Spirits, Cocktails and Wines by the Glass up to $12 per serving.

*Starting from: 49.00 USD Per Night

Well, I am sure they can. But they might not want to. Maybe they are waiting to see how it works out before they adopt it. Maybe they don't want the lines exactly the same. If a Chevy was the same as a Cadillac, why offer both of them? Most likely its all a matter of money. But I am sure you already know that.

They attract a different kind of cruiser. RCL has enough people falling off ships without unlimited booze. They're also the only line out there that you can't but a bottle of hard stuff for your room.

Although owned by the same corporation, RCI and Celebrity are 2 different cruiseline companies. They have different management, are in different cruiseline catagories (RCI - mass market; Celebrity - Premium), and appeal to different types of cruisers.

If they think they can make more money on their soda, beer and alcohol sales with a beverage package, they will do it. Personally, I don't think they would implement a beverage package on RCI like this, because they would have to charge such a high price to make money on it. But I don't know for sure, we shall see if it works on Celebrity.

The simple answer to the OP's question is "follow the money". Those three words hold true for virtually everything in life.

Royal Caribbean passengers drink more than Celebrity passengers, thus RCI would lose money on packages where Celebrity is making a profit on them. Different passenger demographics.

Make no mistake - if Celebrity didn't make a profit on the packages they'd drop them in a heartbeat. If RCI could increase bar profits by offering packages, they'd offer them in a heartbeat.

Nothing is done by a cruise line (or any corporation) without the goal being minimal cost and maximum profit.

Dave you are correct; in addition to making money, Celebrity has a lot less ships to offer the booze package with. If Royal were to offer it; they would have to offer it on all ships; maybe they are testing Celebrity with the fewer amount of ships to see how much they can make.

They used to allow you to purchase a bottle in the liquor store and for an extra $9 you could take it back to your cabin. They also used to have a drink package for alcoholic beverages. Then, it all stopped!!

With all this talk about beverages, I was wondering what does a glass of house wine cost?

Default Cost of Soda

I am a sucker for Diet Coke, I know its bad. I drink as much as 10 can sodas a day. I am very picky and don't like the taste of fountain sodas. I pay on the average $1.78 plus 15% gratuity per soda. On my Mediterranean cruise I had to add Vat tax on top. So yes I have a very expensive habit and well worth it .

Nothing wrong with that... I like Diet Mountain Dew... But I don't think they have that on the RCI ships.

If you want milk at diner, do they charge for that also? I know you have to pay for soda and wine/beer, but what beverages are free with diner? Milk? Water? Ice Tea?

Thanks,
